Hey all
I'm new to this club and I like how the site is setup. My problem I have a 00 grand am se and this is third fuel pump that will have to be replaced since we have owned it. I want to replace the pump myself and wanted to know how difficult is it to replace? I don't know why the pump keeps going out in this car and it can't be normal. I have a repair manual and it doesn't look to be to hard. Any help would be welcomed. Thanks

I would replace the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator at the same time to rule those out as the cause of your premature pump failure issues.

Keep your tank above 1/4 as the pump is cooled by the gas in the tank, I don't know if this could be a reason for the continued replacement or not? Have you replaced the Fuel Filter?
I am not an expert, so these are guesses.
Does your car have passlock? I know this can cause the same type of symptoms as a failed fuel pump.

Im not extremely experienced with this type of thing, so my advice to you is based on the little information that I do know.
in order for a pump to fry, it has to either overheat as a result of being jammed, or possibly (rarely) because of a problem with the power being supplied to the pump.
1) ensure you have a decent fuel filter, and that there isnt crap in the fuel thats gonna jam your pump. (methanol isn't the greatest thing to add to the fuel system, it will corrode the engine and fuel system)
Do you use regular gas? any addatives?
2) if there is a problem with the wiring the pump wont spin at the correct rpm's which will put more strain on the pump. check the wiring to ensure your getting +12v power to the pump.
3) if possible test the fuel pump by disconnecting it and using an alternative +12v power supply.
report any of your findings
If you have one of the old fuel pumps, try dismantling it. if it spins, then it might be a problem with the wiring / supply voltage.
if its seized, its probably a result of contaminated fuel.

not sure about the passlock. i use 87 or 89 octane no additives. The fuel pressure reg was leaking don't know if that has any affect on the pump. I sprayed starter fluid in the intake and it ran then cut off. Checked fuses all are good. I don't understand whats killing the pump.
