Okay, I recently aquired my dad's 97 GA GT, and I couldn't be happier. That is, until I opened the door and realized what a slob my step mother was... UGH! The entire car really needs a huge detail job, and quite frankly, I am both affraid to do the job and to see how much a detailer would charge for this mess...

To start off, I sucked up all fears of being eaten alive by something living under the dash/seats and decided to give it a go. I took the center console out of the car, it was covered in coffee and soda(yes, you read right, a Canuck said soda, even though I usually say pop) My only choice was to take the pleather boots off and scrub them by hand then throw the rest in the tub and hose it down with hot water to melt away the gooey residue. So far 1.5hrs to remove and clean that... :roll2: I meant to take pics as I went along but the camera was missing, I have it back so I will continue to up date you guys as I continue with the interior clean up. The fun part is, once the interior is done I get to play with the exterior! YAY... lucky me.

Stay tuned, this could take a long time LOL

Edit: Could someone post a list of good products to use for doing the final detailing, my other cars have always just gotten a wipe down with a damp cloth, I want to treat this a little better...

i work at a detail center at a car dealership and we get used cars that seriously if it wasnt my job i would rather burn then clean them. your best bet for a big mess such as carpets and the dash is to go online and get comercial products from granatize such as degreaser and carpet shampoo. to shampoo carpets use the soap and a brush and scrub the hell out of the carpet and spray degreaser on it as well then suck it all up with a shop vac , for the dash and console spray the hell out of it with degreaser then use a towel to clean it then after that use vliquid vinyl or amorall and soak anything plastic in it and shut the doors with the heater on for about 15 min.

I use Simple Green for the plastic, vinyl. Works well, leaves no residue, and smells clean when done (kinda soapy smelling actually). It is one of the few commercial products I use to clean my car.

For cloth and carpets, unless really really very extremely stained, after a good vacuuming try using shaving cream to clean them. Just wet the area slightly, spray on the cream, work it in with a brush in a circular fashion, let sit a bit, then blot up with a towel, vacuum. Most dirt and grease will come up.
