I think you may need to tear apart the s/c and see whats up, if its getting louder, that cant be good...

dont rip it apart yet
do you hear it at idle more then reved?
if its a eaton S/C, theres a plastic peice in the snout that can wear. its pretty easy to fix

Like most fans and fan dirivatives, if you hear a noise coming from it (that isn't the mounting) the first thing to suspect would be the bearings. If the tolerances have gotten larger due to wear and you have any off-axis vibration you can get bad sounds coming from the thing.

listen to it with a screw driver... take the handle end of a screw driver and put it up to your ear, put the other end on your SC... listen around and try to find where the sound is the loudest... I might be in the alternator , or anything else that spins.... when I had my Corrado G60, I thought the charger was making a noise very similar to what you describe, put I did that and turns out the noise was in the alternator, but you could hear it on everything you put the screw driver too because it was all bolted together, but the noise was loudest as the alt....
give it a try, sounds weird, but it works like a charm
