Wow, why bother with all that? My LIM gaskets are leaking for the second time on my car (first time was under warranty)... Fortunately it is an external-only leak right now and I'm going to live with the slow coolant loss over the winter.
Paying for a LIM gasket replacement, with labour, will cost me $500-$800 CDN... So, to me, that's pointless. Come next spring I'm going to buy a 3400 engine (costs about the same money $500+ CDN) and then change the LIM gaskets on that myself (just to be sure doesn't leak again) and then swap the engine.
3400 will be 20-30hp more and to me it makes more sense than taking apart my 3100 which has 160,000km on it and replacing the LIM gaskets. I know you had some additional costs from the radiator, but why pay more for a repair than the entire engine is worth?

^I had no choice. The car was completely UNDRIVABLE and I'm 3 hrs from home at college. I would have considered parting it out back home this summer, but I have no replacement vehicle for college.
On top of this, my family had our van die on us (bout 200K miles) and my sister's cavalier is also in the shop, so we're hurtin right now. I was pretty much forced to fix this, even though I would rather had not.
Gotta be home in 2 weeks for deer hunting and nobody's gonna drive 6 hr round trip to bring me home....
and yeah labor was 70$ USD an hour, you can't negotiate that. that was 14 hours of labor, do the math, about 1K on labor alone, that sucks testicles.

agreed i would never do that ... thats why im doing it myself luckly ... i figure 100 bucks in parts and a few days of me busting my ass is well worth a 1996 grand am Se for 500 bucks
