i have an 01gt with the "ram air" as gm calls it. i want to increase my gas milage and help the car breathe easier but i dont want the cai cuase i dont want to be driving it harder so my question is (and by the i deliver pizza so thats why i want to increase milage) how much gas milage increase can i get from the drop in K&N filter? anything bad about it? what are teh goods? any clinicals? oh and i live in michigan and i heard the cai isnt good for cold weather which is also pushing me away from that.

I didn't notice any gains with K&N drop-in whatsoever. However, it saves money in the long run because you can reuse it.

I live in Ottawa, Canada and our winter is as cold as yours if not colder. I have no winter problems with my K & N drop-in.

I really can't say if it increases gas mileage though, as I put mine in pretty much as soon as I got the car. It sure won't hurt it and it certainly is a better filter than most cheap-o paper filters.

average increase is about 2-3 MPG.

my manager's expidition got 3 mpg more

i went from around 19-20 mpg to 23-25 MPG.

... no argument intended but just so you know it doesn't always work out to better mileage as I experienced no increase :(

I just got one myself, no problems I can tell....although i heard from a pretty smart guy i work with that they are unable to filter out fine silica (sand) particulate. Being a ceramic, silica can be a pretty nasty thing to get too much of cuz it doesn't burn.

/\ I was going to say this. From a KN drop in I got more throttle response and better mpg (1-2).

Freeing up the rest of the intake system (WAI/CAI) would be much better I think, plus you can sell the ram-air for some decent $$.

My plan with my CAI is to run it as WAI in winter and CAI in summer.

when i got my drop in filter i did notice a slight diffrence in throttle response but im not sure about how much gas you save with it...use shell v power gas....it lasts longer than premium gasoline

I forget where I read this, but I remember that someone said that when you use that "recharge kit" to clean and reuse your drop-in K&N air filter, that the oil and chemicals you put on the filter is bad for your engine and can cause some problems.

Is this true? How often are you suppose to clean it anyway?

do you have a PCM retune with advanced timing? If not your waisting money and getting worse mileage.

i don't have a K&N, but i am looking at getting one. i have a 99 with the 2.4litre 4 cyl, and i gained 4mpg city with a $20 glasspack muffler. its a little louder (not by much,) but i can live with that as long as its saving me money!!! lots of good info here about the K&N tho, helps push me over the edge in getting one!!!

What you probally read is if the filter is oiled too much, the oil can get into the mesh of a MAF.. which I am not sure GA's have... I dont think they do, I know Fords have them, and if the filter is over oiled, it could foul up an MAF's reading, also another way an over oiled filer can hard a motor is if it is super charged, excess oil from the filter can blow into the SC, which is something you might not think is an issue, but it can cause dirt to stick to things it shouldnt and could cause premature failure, this was especially the case with the VW G60 Supercharger which I had on my old Corrado, this was a big warning I got from the guy who rebuitl the charger before I bought the car, because the dirt & dust sticking to things its not supposed to will cause it to break down quicker.

jftr, our MAF's do have the mesh.
