well, i've been thinking about taking the 6x9's out of the stock location under the rear deck, cutting slots in the rear deck and mounting them above the rear deck so they are exposed.
what i'm wondering is if this will help at all with rattling that comes from the rear deck, since the 6x9's are no longer hitting into the enclosed space under the rear deck??? i just want to make sure this would be worth my time and not have the same continuous problem. i figure with them also mounted above the rear deck that it would be replacing them much easier as well down the road....

You said that they "hit into the enclosed space"...what do you mean? If you mean that the cones are hitting the deck...I don't think that's possible. So moving then to the top most likely won't fix the problem. I'd personally try to fix the rattle and keep the speakers bottom mounted...this way they aren't visable to thefts either. :)

what i was meaning by the enclosed space was with the speakers mounted in there normal spot....the air flow is under the rear deck pushing up on the rear deck...which i thought could possibly be a cause of rattle....
but the more i think about it, the more they are probably gonna stay mounted under the rear deck and just try and find the rattles and work around them...

I wouldn't. I did this once on an old car, it actually created new rattles... more on that here:

I agree with Matt, I would just keep them underneath. I had some rattling, but I put somthing between the metal deck and the carpeted part which forced the carpeted deck part up which stoppedt the rattling. Why don't you try something similar?

Yea, or alternatively...
I used rubber grommets and stuffed a few (3-4 evenly spaced) in between the rear glass and the carpeted deck. No more bass rattles.

that's something i was thinking about....jamming something between the deck and window...i had tried a cloth material but that didn't work very well....i'll have to dig up some rubber grommets and give that a whirl......thanks matt....

I grabbed a block of wood, cut it to the height I wanted and glued some carpet to it. stuck it underneath and called it a day. Yeah Matt's idea sounds like it will get rid of most of the rattle since it's usually hitting off the back window.

All this time I thought the noises when the bass hit were because they were stock speakers that couldn't handle my alpine head unit, until I found this thread. I decided to go take a look and I discovered that the guy who owned it previously installed component infiniti speakers in it, so I turned up the volume and pushed the panel against the rear window and it sounded pretty nice! I couldn't find anything else around the house to fix it and didn't wanna go to the store so I got my mom's hot glue gun out and made gobs of hot glue on wax paper then shoved them between the panel and the window and the rattling has completely stopped.
