I have a 95 grand am and IM curious to know if seats out of a 4th GEN grand am will fit in my 95. I know that 95 was the cut off point for my generation but I was curious to know if seats from a 96 97 or a 98 would fit in my car. Primarily the back seat. I've got some dibs on some leather pull down seats and I'll buy them if it'll fit. Im not 100% sure that the front ones would fit or not. I've need to do any work to make it fit that'd be nice to know too.

92-98 should have the same seat setup. So they should fit...

A '95 is a 4th gen.

There the same seats, they look slightly different but there the same exact ones. Also Johns right, a 95 is a 4th gen.

I thought you meant 5th gen seats at first, and then I was going to advise against it, because I personally think the 5th gen seats are really, really comfortable.

How on earth is the 95 a 4th Gen?

The 70s RWD GA is the 1st Gen
The 8x to 91 GA is the 2nd Gen
The 92-95 GA is the 3rd Gen
The 96-98 GA is the 4th Gen
The 99-05 GA is the 5th Gen

The G6 is the 6th Gen (Hence the name G6).

But yes the 92-95 and 96-98 (3rd and 4th Gens) are pretty identical, other than the interior, some of the exterior parts (fascias, mouldings, lamp assemblies, spoiler, etc.); and the electronics (airbags, OBD-II, etc.). The seats from a 4th gen will fit the 3rd gen no problem, as was mentioned.

The 96-98 seats are virtually identical, other than fabric and slight changes to the shape of the center. The mounting points are the same.

92-98 is the same chassis generation. Don't forget there's 2 RWD gens.

Generation 1: 1973 - 1975
Generation 2: 1978 - 1980
Generation 3: 1985 - 1991
Generation 4: 1992 - 1998
Generation 5: 1999 - 2005

Oh crap really? Boy am I an idiot, LOL. So the 92-98 is considered the same generation? I know mechanically it is nearly the same but the cars are different enough for me to call them another generation.

I guess it never really occured to me because I never really looked into the older (RWD) cars. I figured G6 = 6th, 99-05 = 5th, etc. I guess going backwards wasn't the best idea!

What do the first two generations look like (I thought there was only one)?

Well actually 92-93 and 94-95 were almost as equally different as 92-95 vs 96-98 mechanically and electrically.

But if going on the logic that 92-95 was different from 96-98, then 85-91 would be divided up too: 85-88 (squared front) and 89-91 (rounded front)

I don't know much about the RWD GA's.

Wow.. I guess the seats will fit then. I wonder if Im going to have any problems bolting them up. It's comming from a RED 97 GT so I hope it fits the way I'm thinking it will. The only reason IM considering this is because I feel that the black leather will give the interior a better look. Plus in addition to this the rear seat has the "Pull-Down" option.

The rear may differ in shape slightly, but should bolt down in the same manner. The front seats will bolt to the sliders with the same 4 bolts as the old seats.

And IIRC '95 has the '96-98 sytle suspension changes...

Yes it does, in terms of suspension (only rear changed) it's 92-94 vs 95-98. Which only further complicates the revisions... although 95 was a transition year in general.

Wait so in 95 they changed the suspension? Pointless--I mean I always thought the rear suspension was so horrible on the 96-98 because it was from the early 90s, but they actually changed it in 95? They couldn't have changed much because I don't understand how it can get any worse than the rear setup on the 95-98 as it is!

I think someone swapped the front seats from a 99+ GA. Not sure what amount of custum work he had to do though.

And yea...95's had a rear suspension revision that was carried over to the 96-98's. I'm not sure what the changes were exactly, but it still leaves much to be desired. I'm surprised GA's handle as well as they do with a semi-independant setup.

A project I should be tackling somwtime this winter. I dotnt think it should be too hard. Just have to mount the old tracks to the new seats. In a nutshell anyway.

First gen GA looks almost like a GTO (same platform)
the second looks more like a 80's Chevy Malibu (also same platform)

As for '92-'95 and '96-'98 Just because they 'look' different they share a large majority of parts. The Chassis and main body structure is all the same, thats why you can swap parts between teh too without much more than turning bolts.

Just like the 4th gen Camaros and Firebirds. The '93-'97s look far different than the '98-'02s. It was just a visual make over.

Shoot, although not called a 'generation' the Ford Mustang shared the same platform from the mid 70s all the way to 1993!
