I've got a 97 GAGT and I just installed a new Kenwood headunit which came with the adapter plates from Crutchfield.

I would like to know if I can cut out the little support bracket that holds up the back end of the factory radio because right now the adapter plate has a special section that clicks into it and forces the new one din radio to stick out 2-3 inches.

First off...why do you need to cut it off? Is the deck hitting it? Mine doesn't with my mounting kit. I would think the only way for it to hit would be if it was a flush mounting kit. You can cut/break it off, but you won't ever be able to put it back on...not that it's really going to do THAT much. The bolts will still hold the stock deck in place if you wish to remove the Kenwood at any point, so go ahead and cut it off...

Sorry I wasn't very clear, I was hoping to make the stereo flush with the first plate and not have the special spacing adapter. It works with it right now but I just like having the stereo flush with the dash.

Thanks,

Yeah you sure can, as long as you don't want the stock deck back in there you'll be fine to do that.

The weird thing is most people like that flush mounting business. To me having the thing come out of the dash is a lot nicer. First of all it is easier to reach (okay only by a bit, but still). Second of all, to me it actually looks better that way because when you mount it flush you can tell that the original HU was larger than the one you have in. With the kit and it coming out, I don't notice so much.

Then again I'm like the only one, lol. Yep you can do it though, just be sure that is the way you want it to look because there isn't really any going back. (Well you could backstrap it after that but it isn't really the same.)
