Alright well I'm doing my sub box in fibreglass, but my parents say i have to keep the spare. I was going to completely build the sub box out of fibreglass, but I've found it take a while to dry/air out/prep. Now i am considering building a wooden box but leaving the front off, angling the subs, and fibreglassing them, do you think this will work?
Below are some pics I've found on the internet that i kinda want it to look like.
and one of what another guy did using a wood box, do u recommend this or do u think i should take the time to fibreglass it all?

dude, thats lame, your not a show car, i would build a nice box out of FG in the rear corner.. one sub, mold the amp on the other side, thus leaving 85% of your trunk in place... this based on you still listening to mom and dad...

it aint lame, it looks nice and considering i spend about 50% of my time with my trunk open in parking lots i consider it pretty cool. A ton of guys around are doing it and the results are amazing, My buddy's got a 03 Eclipse and you should see the compliments he get's on it, and he doesn't go to shows, it's just the fun in working on it and coming up with something cool...I'm a little suprised, i didn't expect someone like u who does the ultimate in custom jobs to say something like that...ur not a show car, why do u need a tv? just my 0.02 cents

im with brandon on this one. sorry dude. that setup is virtually pointless in a daily driver.
and that brings me to a question. why do you park in a parking lot and then open your trunk for all to see what you've got? that's just window shopping for thieves, been there. just doesn't make sense to me. i've got a nice system in my fiances car, but dont show it to hardly anyone. i've got a tv and PS2 in my truck, but i've got DARK windows and few people know about it. just cause you've got something cool you shouldn't show it off to everyone, one day it's gonna bite you really hard on the a$$

it's all my buddies, i don't just hang out with anyone...if i don't know them i'm not going to fashion my car to them, and besides i got a car alarm on there and they all know it. (my system isn't that great - 2 12" comps. and a 400w kicker amp w/ an alpine deck...it's the lowest of all the stuff kicker makes.).
who said anything about a daily driver? I haven't driven my GA in 2 weeks, i don't drive it if it's rainy or snowy out, and it's garaged every night, I feel I can say that my GA is not a "daily driver" car. I have another vehicle I drive to school everyday. (my car has been farther than 30 miles away from home only 3 times, and 2 of the times it was to install parts that i don't have the ability to install.).
now that i've answered your questions, i still have one for you.
Why do you need a tv with a playstation 2? not trying to get a fight going here but when do you use that? I'll bet i have my trunk open more than you use that think...i'm just trying to show you where i'm coming from.

Yeah.........and a PS2 isn't.
Anyhow, leave the kid alone, if he wants something in his trunk to look cool, fine. People like their own stuff.
Yeah, stuff gets jacked from time to time, but people still get jacked even if they don't show off their stuff in a parking lot.
Anyhow, back on topic. Do some more search on the internet I'm sure you can find some nice fiberglassing projects that use less wood.

hey thanks PontiacGT, I really appriciate it, I'm not trying to start a fight over the site, were all GA fans and I'm sure there is more important stuff to fight about when it comes to our cars, I just wanted a few pointers on how to's. Anyways thanks alot.

Do what ya want kid, i for one want to see how it turns out. I'm a fiberglasser myself, and love to see unique trunks. Just keep it simple so that in case you ever need the trunk space to hall something, u have it.
Peace. Btw, LMHConceptsFL, thats my aim sn, hit me up some time.

i see where you're coming from. it's your car, do what you want. good luck with it, i just dont think having your trunk like that is very feasible on a car you drive on the street. i've got a HUGE box in the trunk of my GA, and honestly i regret it. i have absolutely no trunk space and i can't get to my spare or jack. it was nice at the beginning, but gets old after a while
i have the PS2 for the same reason you're wanting the trunk setup...showing off. but my PS2 doesnt take away any functionality from my truck whereas i think you'll regret a fiberglass trunk in the long run.
and don't trust the alarm, they're theft deterrants, not theft stoppers. you can get by MOST, but not all, alarms just by clipping a wire. they just keep honest people honest.
but again, good luck with it

keep it sealed. ported gets annoying after a while.

Well I've decided to build a wood box and fibreglass the front, so if i get sick of the entire trunk fibreglassed i can remove it all except the box. I put a peice of fibreglass on a chunk of wood and it won't come off without destroying it so it should work.
I too wanna hear about the ported thing tho...I've had sealed, bandpass, and ported boxes and I think they all sound the same...

Let's not get crazy here!!!=P
I wouldn't say they sound the same at all, but i wouldn't say any of them are "annoying"...well maybe bandpass, but that's just me. :)

Well ported it good for constant bass and sealed is better for the popping bass and since i've gotten out of the stage of loud constant bass and want comfortable more precise sounding bass i'm going to go with two 12" W3s sealed Vs. my 2 10" W1's that are slot ported. \
The reason I say ported is annoying cause that is why i'm upgrading to a different box-(should be done this weekend) and having it sealed. I've had my w1's for a while and the popping bass doesn't sound as good- can't explain it you'd have to hear it in person.

It's all in the type of music. If it has punchy bass (rock, or techno) then ported is good....if it has tight bass (rap) then sealed is good...but that changes with personal preferance too.

oh ok, i got you.

if the bass is sloppy in a ported box then you need to look into your design and/or sub. although i wouldn't go so far as to say a ported box is as tight as a sealed box a good design is fairly tight.

might not get a reply to this, but to people who have fibreglassed before, how many layers do u recommend before i pull the box out? I have 2 on the bottom and 1 on the sides, u think i could pull it out and finish it in the garage...got some other mods coming for my car and i need to actually move my car off the garage/driveway for the first time in two weeks.

I like that box... but i have a problem with what was said about it.
Ok. if you want a custom box, thats cool :) but why have what all of your buddies have? is there any way you could change the design to be a little different from them? like maybe in the center mounth the amps there or what not?? im not trying to say dont do it, its your car and what not, but im thinking try to be a little different from your buds.... this is what i did

(and yes, you can still use the trunk) (I have speaker guards over them now) (but my trunk isnt a show trunk either :)

yeah i understand what u are saying. I should have been more specific. Our trunks are not excact because his is a hatchback, and he's mounting his subs on the side because he's putting two tv screens against the back seat.

How in the world do you make those boxes that encourporate(sp) the whole trunk, are they a sub box with just amp mounts added on or what. and i say do it to it because any fibreglass box looks a million times better than a wood one.
traingeek087
11-11-2005, 06:12 PM
ok so i've started building my wood box. the bottom and back are wood because they're flat and the front and top are fibreglass to fit the curves. I'll post pics in a few days

tube ports = asslike sq
square ports that are 'l' shaped and have rounded edge's = almost as good as sealed except you still have the freq dropoff
i've ran sealed, round port, square port, and bandpass
my favorite is square port just because they sound good and are very loud, i currently run sealed though, my subs were over powering my highs and mids, which is hard to do with bostons
for an example of the square ports, goto www.powered4sound.com

ok quick question, do i need to divide the subs, or is it alright if they use the same airspace (do i need to make a wall between them like many other boxes or does it really matter?)
Bjornboy81
11-14-2005, 01:18 PM
If they are powered off one channel (bridged or mono amp) then one chamber is fine...if they are run off of two channels (left and right) then seperate chambers. They can cancel eachother out if they are out of phase and in the same chamber.

11-14-2005, 04:36 PM
well i'm going to be running a one channel amp, but would it be safe if i just did anyways? would it matter either way? I need some help on this because i'm almost done with my box...thanks guys.
Bjornboy81
11-14-2005, 06:58 PM
It won't hurt anything dividing the chambers with a mono amp...it's just when you have a 2 channel that you gotta watch it...sorry, I should have said that :)

perfectly alright man thanks for the help. Probably not going to be able to do much anyways because the car is in the garage because of a snow downpour. Oh well guess I can find something else to mod while I'm waiting.
