Speakers: This is very subjective each listeners tastes. For that reason I purchased based on sound preference. Specs help show some raw data, but IMO you need to hear and compare when speaker shopping.

Headunit: I start with a solid brand, then price/features. At that point I go to the manufacturers website and download the instruction manual and decide if this is the headunit I want.

You are being way too general for us to give you much advice. Define your taste in music and your approximate budget and we should be able to give you some good suggestions and tips.

In a general sense, though, CEA compliance for power ratings is good for comparison reasons, and you should look for speakers that look and feel like they are well made. Your ears are the best gauge of what will work for you.

In my experience, Alpine makes very nice head units and so does Pioneer. Alpine speakers are nice too, I had Alpine 6X9 Type S and switched up to Polk, who also makes some great speakers.
