Gas gauge stays at 1/2 tank constantly

Ok, this isnt exactly a problem yet, but even with the battery disconnected, engine running, not running, it makes no difference, the gauge stays at 1/2 tank no matter what on the 88 grand am.
Any important info I can provide is that its an 88, 4 dr, 2.5 L 4 cyl, auto tranny, base model.

try tapping on the guage in the dashboard? probably the needle is stuck? shake the car?
