yesterday morning i go outside and it flash rains/hails/snows (gotta love colorado...) and i guess my belt slid off or something upon startup

battery light was on, i figured the belt might have been slipping so i drive it to work (7 mins)

where i work i was able to pick up a mobile battery charger just incase the worse was to happen

i get a break, so i go to the car, starts up fine, even better than normal, but the light is still on so i drive to autozone, about another 7 minutes.

i get up to the counter and ask them to do a alt/batt test to see whats goin on (i really didnt have much time, i had to get back to work) so they wheel it out. i pop the hood and he connects it to the battery and begins the test. i happen to look over at the alternator

NO BELT!

the autozone guy looks over and says sarcastically, yep theres your problem. so we go back in and i get a gatorback, and i ask him whats a good place to get it installed, he recommends the place right next door, finishline.

they squeeze me in the open bay and quote me about 5-10 minutes to do it at about $30. i told them to go ahead, its just money i didnt have the time to deal with it.

45 minutes later they get done with it (they couldnt get the tensioner back enough to slip the belt on, damn LD9!)

so pretty much ~$50 and an hour later im back on the road back to work, from my 30 minute break lol

CHECK YOUR BELTS!

and also got a question to go along with this.

how many belts does the car have? is it just a single one? because it didnt overheat, the power brakes, and steering was there. didnt try A/C

I think that only has one. It may not have had time to over heat, and the brakes don't run off the belt (vaccum only) but it's weird the steering worked. There may be more than one then.

You're lucky it didn't overheat on you! Glad you got it all fixed. :)

On the 2.3 and 2.4 the only accessories that are on the belt are AC compressor and alternator. The water pump is driven by the timing chain.

It's safe to run on a temporary without the belt... just need to keep an eye on battery charge. I've removed it to race at the track a few times. BIG FAT DISCLAIMER... this is NOT ok for V6 owners.

So it only cost you $50? I have heard that it is over and above 100 dollars because thay have to move the engine?
Also, where do you live? I am in Denver :)

Driven by intake cam on the drivers side.

You're thinking the 3x00 V6 - since the engine must be supported cause the mount has to be unbolted. There's no need to undo anything on the 2.3/2.4 to change the belt, although getting it around the crank pulley is no picnic.

On the V6, you SUPPORT the engine so you can remove a few bolts on the engine mount and snake the thru the space.

Takes about 5 minutes to position a floor jack with a wood 2 x 4 to distribute force to the underside of the oil pan.
No big deal once you know the process, and much easier than many other car/engine setups.

Yeah, I was mixing them up, thanks for the clarrification- I am not as worried anymore!
BUT a friend of mine said that it would cost him 300+ to replace the belt on his V-6? Does this sound right?

oh heck no...it took me like 20 minutes to change it in my driveway. As long as he has a good jack to put under the engine, and a torque wrench for tightening the engine mount it's easy.

^Yea, 300 is rediculous... we did it on a 3400 in a hotel lot once.
