View Full Version : GAS MILAGE - What are you getting??

I went on the highway this past weekend, and did a precise gas milage check on my return leg.
Highway MPG: 30.8 mpg :WhooHoo: :D :D
’96 3.1 V6 automatic, stock GT with dual exhaust, 2-dr.
* Filled up in Tucson and entered freeway;
* Drove 115 miles AT SPEED LIMIT (20 mi @ 55, 15 mi @ 65, 80 mi @75);
* Light traffic; 78*F, calm and dry; AC ‘off’ entire trip; nearly-flat and straight desert highway; 1000 ft. net elevation descent.
* Exited freeway in Phoenix and immediately filled-up again.
So, basically PURE highway driving.
It was quite a chore keeping the mph low, what with minivans passing me and all
* * * *
What kind of milage are YOU getting, highway and/or city???
Post yer milage!!
Indicate under what conditions, and your year/engine/tranny.
Please use only Miles Per Gallon, mpg.
Please do not use “miles per tank” or other non-precise reference data.
Canadians and other metricated people:
Sorry, I don’t know how you measure gas consumption, nor what conversion factor to use for mpg.
Forgive me, I’m a metric-deficient american.

On the highway, ~30MPG (US) is normal for me. However, in the city I'm lucky if I get 20MPG...

PS: Years ago I lived in Africa, and I learned the French-metric method was x.x liters per 100 kms.
Just didn't seem like that would be used on this side of the Atlantic.

Yeah that's about right, but the problem is as mentioned above by Rick, we don't use km/L in Canada--we use xx L/100km.
I mean you can still make use of the conversion factor but it gets a little more tricky.
To make it easy, here's an online converter:

i usually calculate my mpg every fill up. just take the mileage driven on the tank and divide it by how much gas u put in, that is about as accurate as it is gonna get. here r my mpg's
All highway (80mph) with a few city miles=30mpg :D and 400 on tank
50/50 split driving like granny :( =25mpg
70 city, 30 highway driving at redline=23mpg :D
All city driving with pedal to the floor=20mpg
I have a 93 with the 3300 V6 :D , the shitty 3speed  . Even though i may floor it, once i get to 5 over the speed limit I put the cruise on. i love cruise i use it everywhere city or highway. that is what helps me get such good gas mileage. no fluctuation in speed = saved gas!
Bottom line USE CRUISE, IT SAVES GAS. and dont give me any of that it's not safe bull.

Tires at 35psi, no extra weight, pcv valve is good, new gas cap. Synthetic oil shouldnt make a difference in gas mileage. O2 sensors are freaking expensive too (and there are 2 of them). Besides, i've been told you dont need to replace them unless they've gone bad.
devilzfan300
12-03-2005, 12:15 PM
I found that synthetic oil really helped my mileage. Also, I have not replaced my o2 sensors yet, but I remember reading a post on here somewhere that replacing the o2 sensor helped a lot.
Also, maybe you might want to make sure your fuel injector is clean. Bring it to a shop to get it professionally done, but if you just want to keep it clean, use some STP or Lucas injector cleaner until you need it cleaned.
Also, you could use some seafoam and put some in your crankcase about 200 miles before an oil change, add it to your brake booster line or PCV valve line, and add some to your gas tank. I have heard seafoam works wonders too.
Other then that, maybe you should look into new parts, such as a battery, CAI, muffler, to hopefully fix your problem...

I always divide miles traveled by gallons to fill the tank-- I'm getting 25-26 miles per gallon. A little disappointing (I've only had the car for a month and a half) The EPA ratings state 34 mpg highway, which is most all that I drive.
My '94 and then my '95 Skylark, 3.1 V6 got me 30 mpg without fail. Didn't matter how I drove, where I drove or what time of season.
I haven't tried the tune-up thing yet (It's got 100,000 miles on it)
I intend to go that route and keep my fingers crossed.

Well I just completed a 5000km trip from Niagara Falls, Canada to Florida and back. Here are my results for mileage:
Tank 1: 30.46 MPG (432.5 miles, 14.199 gal)
Tank 2: 34.46 MPG (407 miles, 11.812 gal)
Tank 3: 32.57 MPG (222.3 miles, 6.824 gal)
Tank 4: 28.59 MPG (375.5 miles, 13.133 gal)
Tank 5: 33.59 MPG (306 miles, 9.111 gal)
Tank 6: 31.98 MPG (440.3 miles, 13.766 gal)
Tank 7: 32.41 MPG (432 miles, 13.329 gal)
My first tank was of course leaving home, which was below freezing temperatures, hence the lower MPG. By West Virginia I was into warmer temps, and that is where I filled up. My total trip was 4900km, but I converted everything to miles.
Tank 4 was low because we were touring Orlando, FL. Disney, Internation Drive, Universal Studios etc. Stop and go. The rest was primarily highway and country road driving.
Average speed was 70 mph, on cruise control.
Didn't burn a hint of oil. I ran AC delco filter and Valvoline Max Life 5W30. K&N air filter cleaned before the trip. Tires @ 40PSI
I think that's it for info. I found no difference in gas stations. I filled up at various stations, including Shell, BP, Hess, Sunoco, Raceway. Always using 87 octane.
Car performed flawlessly, with 170,000km. Everything still works including the A/C thankfully!

Your not alone. I'm lucky if I get 25mpg highway. 114K miles could have something to do with it though.
We'll see if it get better, as I plan to replace the spark plugs. The previous owner left me with receipts of all work done. Things that I didn't notice were spark plugs, tranny fluid replacement, and coolant flush. All of which I will take care of within the next week or so.

You guys getting 30mpg on the 3400 should consider yourselves lucky
99GASE, 3400, 80,000miles, auto, custom WAI w/AEM filter, no muffler
226 miles on 12 gallons= 19mpg city:mad:
280 miles on 11 gallons= 25mpg mostly highway:(
I fill up when the idiot light goes on, use 87 octane, only go to Speedway for fillups.
Before I got my WAI and old muffler I was getting ~187miles per 11 gallons which comes out to 17MPG!
I use the fun pedal sometimes, but even so these numbers are low.
Any ideas?:???:

semi hard driving with 80% highway 20 in town and I get right at 35mpg. I live in OKC and it was around 70ish when I did my figured, the car went a total trip of 486 miles that day in state driving, the next tank of 435 in state driving at about the same mix fell down to 32MPG and the next tank is back up again right around 34 at least
I was very impressed it kicked my 99 Sentra SEL's butt all over the place! My Sentra got like 37 when it was under 100k and then now being closer to 200k it gets like 24-26 on the highway.
Oh the semi hard is compared to how I drove my old Maxima VS the Grand Am, I am a little easier on it than I was with my Maxima
Oh yeah I have one of the freak gas gauges also, when its gets down to the last line it goes to full an then starts back down to the E mark as it gets empty. Everyone that rides in my car is like your gage is broken, I always so no its not its a weird design they did on the 96-98 sadly most everyone beleives it as it goes back to the E spot whhile you drive :)

Please tell me you're not serious. If any of that crap improved gas milage, the cars would come with them from the factory.
Don't believe the claims, they only lighten your wallet. Several magazines have done tests and several have decreased MPG's.
