i dunno....the intake does lower your mpg...more air in the engine will mean your engine will compromise by adding more fuel..make more power but lowers your mpg...it probably is also something else because 5mpg is a big drop if you didn't change your driving style

Thats what a cold air intake does. It fools the PCM into thinking it is getting colder air than what it really is. The PCM enriches the fuel.

It doesn't "trick" the PCM into "thinking" it's getting colder air....because the engine IS actually getting colder air. :)
What you described is the POS Ebay IAT resistor mod thing
Hey 96Pont, where do you live, because if it's starting to get cold (like it is here im MI) then that'll affect gas milage a lot if you have a CAI. I noticed a 3-4 mpg drop lately.

i thought the cai would increase MPG as long as u dont beat on the car more..thats what i was told anyways. do u get on your car more now that u have the cai?

I went back to stock because I was told that in the colder weather it will be harder to start but I think that is crap. I drive the car the same. I have had it 4 months and had the head gaskets blow. What other major probelms are the 3100 known for?

It can increase it because it's less restrictive, and during the summer I get way better milage, but now that it's cold I'm getting worse. As soon as my car is running right :pissed2: I'm going to go to a WAI setup and see if it helps.

if you went back to the stock air box with the cai tubing still hooked up you might actually be choking the K&N air filter resulting in a f'd up fuel/air ratio, try removing the intake tubing, as far as the cold wather thing im not sure , i live in florida where its pretty much perfect driving weather all year long, well when we're not running from hurricanes.
