A friend says that his 2001 Grand Am SE with a 3.4 liter requires mid grade fuel per the manaul. Of course, he lost the manual and can't prove it.
Does the MANUAL call for mid grade gasoline in this motor?

No. The 3400 only requires regular.

I don't think there's a car out there that "requires" mid grade.

The HO Quad 4 is tuned for 91 octane. Depending on where you live that's mid or high grade. Or in my case, it goes 87, 89, 93
My Spec V is the same way. The 95 is on the anti-detonation 94 octane diet.

He claims he found his manual and it says do not run anything lower than 89 octane. I'm not sure if I should believe him or not???

in MI here, 91 (at the places I've seen) is premium with 89 being midgrade.
How do you get 94? Octane booster or mixing racing fuel? :)

Here 89 is midgrade and 87 is regular. Maybe that is where the difference is coming from.

Sunoco stations in MI usually have 94. Except they use ethanol so I won't buy it.

More like 87.
Section 5-5... right from the owners manual:

Sounds to me that you have a serious problem going on there. :(

87 in regular, its recomended not to use under that but i dont know much that seels it, well walmart gas blows, i never use it but it use to make my moms check engine light go on, honestly i would use midgrade, it burns alot better and you get better gas mileage, i do anyways, worth the extra 10cents a gallon, the 93 octane seems to get about the same
