I bought a new head unit to replace the monsoon unit in my '04 GAGT. The unit I bought was the Pioneer DEH-7700MP. I went to Circuit City to pick up the GMRC01 chime module, and the guy at the counter said that they could do the install for me then and there if I wanted, as long as no rewiring was required. It seemed like a pretty good idea, as I'm lucky if I have time to put gas in the ar lately, let alone work on it.

When I got my car back, the tech said that he was having problems with the speakers. The front speakers either play static or don't work, and the back speakers have minimal static. He said that in order for the system to function properly, he would have to rewire everything to bypass the monsoon amp (obviously for an additional fee). He said my system wouldn't be as loud, and he "recommended" buying a new amp. He then said that the new head unit and new amp would require new speakers.

While I have an electronics background, audio systems, especially those in cars, are something I know little or nothing about. However, I think I'm being jerked around here. I told the guy I'd think about the new equipment, and I left.

I haven't had a chance to check out the wiring job he did, so I have no idea if the front speakers are blown, or if they're just not wired right. Also, he did wire in the chime module, but he left the module itself in the little area below the HVAC knobs. So now, the chimes are so f***ing loud, you can hear them from pretty far away.

I would think I could change out the head unit without too much difficulty. I really do think this must be a wiring problem. Does anyone else have any opinion on this? Is changing out the HU such a common problem with the monsoon system (as their tech said)? It doesn't seem right to me ...

Yup. If you're going to change out the H.U. you may as well plan on not using any of the rest of the Monsoon system. DO NOT try & hook those Monsoon speakers up to your head unit! They are 2 ohm & will most likely smoke your H.U.

i thought you could buy a harness to plug the headunit into the monsoon setup :???: im so glad i didn't have to mess with any of that in emily's 99 GA, but i dont guess it would have mattered. i ended up replacing EVERYTHING audio in the car anyway :P

Well, I picked up a new amp (nothing special), and some 4-ohm speakers ... I think I'm gonna give that a shot this weekend ... If I don't get fried, I'll let everyone know how it turns out

I have to agree about the avatar joey

If the chiming is still to loud you can open up the chime unit and it will show you a place to cut a wire that will make the chiming a lot softer
