well i have a 94 grand am and would like to put a system in it, i don't really care what the box (for 2, 12's) looks like. i just want it to work for me. my first problem is i like to keep shit in my trunk, most dangerous object for the subs are my skates. i've ruined a nice pair of kenwoods that way. i'd like a removable box so i can get to my spare tire. my second problem is my driving, sometimes i find myself turning a bit too sharp or slamming on the brakes. i allways find my box crooked or all the way up against the seat.
any suggestions on how to have a tight fitting box still removable?
ps i'm not afraid to cut some wood and get my hands into some epoxy resin.
(ok epoxy on my hands is a lil scarry i think i'll use a brush.)
oh yeah and any pic's on custom fit/built boxes would be really good food for thought . espically if it's a grand am :D

1. Please stop posting in blue...its way too hard to read :)
2. If you have a single box with 2 12's it should be moving. The best thing to do is to build (or buy) a box that matches the requirements of the subs as suggested by the manufacturer. If you want you can always strap it down to the trunk floor. And if you're worried about stuff in the trunk ruining the subs, put grills on them :)

well i was reading another forum about a shelving/cabnet unit in the trunk for tools, jumper cables, and other misc. it made me think because i hate having my toolbox where it can roll over and everything inside is scrambles. i think i'm going to find a way to make my sub box complete with small cabnets on top. it'll go all the way to the top of the trunk as well as the sides and if i make it just right and modify my spare tire "hole" i'll still be able to slide my spare out from under it...i think it'll take a bit of planning so i can fit my jack, toolbox, jumpercables and whatever else in it without the subs making it rattle, maby some rubbery foam... any ideas are a big help in the planning of my 'WONDER BOX' lol
keep the replys coming and when it's finished i'll post pix.
p.s. it'll pry be next summer b4 it's done money's tight and working in your trunk in the winter sucks.

haha yea it does suck to work on your car outside in the winter... now if you had a garage or a shop (like at a college) that you could use then that's different. but i too have not been able to do my custom trunk either since the weather got too cold too quick. plus i ran out of money. anyways i'm modifying my spare tire cover as well. i'm doing a custom fiberglass trunk that will cover all sides of the trunk including the floor. but i still like to put stuff in the trunk and use it for storage/transportation... so what i haven't really figured out is how to keep the floor painted fiberglass and not have it get all messed up without having to put anything like non-skid padding down... though i'll prob do that.
anyways what i wanted to suggest... is that when doing custom trunk mods... you might consider fibeglassing ... it looks nice when done properly and can be done properly pretty easily. almost like applying bondo to a car if you've ever done that. cept a lil different. what i also wanted to say is that you don't neccesarily need fiberglass mat or cloth to do fiberglassing. you can use just about any cloth you want as long as you use fiberglass resin.. sort of like epoxy... pretty much the same deal apply using a chip brush that you can get at lowes or hardware store for like 50 cents. don't listen to people who say you HAVE to have fiberglass mat or cloth to do it... because of strength. as long as you have a decent material it won't matter. because you put a light coat of bondo on top anyways so that adds to the strength.

i almost forgot. also when fiberglassing... there are different ways of building the box. you can either build the box out of wood and fiberglass on top of that (kinda like a hybrid or whatever they call it.. i forgot the name...lol) or you can build a wood frame and use fiberglass cloth or mat or speaker cloth material (what most audio shops use for the bottom of the custom box). but it all depends on your tastes and what you feel like doing etc.. plus with painted fiberglass... you have to worry about chipping paint etc...

fiberglass sounds like a good idea but i'd pry cover it with carpet any ways. i'm think i'd want the box removable incase i need trunk/backseat room for skis or my bike. maybe i could add some sort of cabinet, either on top or on the sides of my 12" speakerbox, for storage. then i'd want to fiberglass something around the outside edges to make it fit the trunk nicely, and cover it with carpet to match the trunk. i think that the cover on the the spare tire thing has to go tho. it's plastic and i have the thing to screw down the spare and that lid thing but the box covers the screw and it's a bitch to get the spare out without taking the whole box out. maybe some kind of hinged flap on the bottom edge of the box. any ideas on how to form the fiberglass i've never seen it done before. maby i need foam or something to fiberglass to the box? or i could skip the fiberglass alltgether and work on building cabinets to fit tight enough not to allow the box to move. ... post any ideas, the more the better.
