if you want louder go with ported/slot ported... if you want precise good bass.. sealed is the answer.

summed up nicely:) Cheap way out is to buy universal sized boxes. They aren't designed specifically for your sub so it won't sound as well but will still suffice. I and Im sure most will agree to build a box with the dimensions in the manual that come with the sub(s) or find the dimensions on the companies website

Like it was said, certian enclosures will give you different results. Also some subs perform better in certain enclosures. Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the sub and consult them. Tell them exactly what your looking to get (tons o bass, tight/clean bass etc) and I'm sure they can give you the correct specs for an enclosure.

Then you want subs that are made to perform best in a slot ported enclosure, with ALOT of power handeling.

2 Alpine type R 12's kenwood 9201(1800+ peak power) Q-logic ported box..it's slot port tuned to around 45hertz. Can I say that on 1/4 volume my dash rattles. These woofers need a lot of power, anything less than a 1000 watt amp and they sound like crap. For off the shelf box they sound really good in there.

Do you have two of the Kenwood 9201D amps or just one? I think that ill take two of em.

I might switch to 2 amps once it warms up. It's too cold here to rebuild the amp rack to hold 2 of them.

If you're not set on a sub, I'd look into the kicker solo-barics (the square kickers) you can put them in a sealed box, and they hit so hard your head will hurt!

My friend has a 15" L7 and we compared them. One of my 12's(type-r) dominated his L7. Had mine hooked up to a rockford fosgate 1001Bd amp at the time also, but the L7 did get pretty loud so I'm not puttin the solo-barics down.

Its hard to compare them because i have a 12" type r and a alpine m605 amp and my friend has a 15" l7 in his explorer and his is louder than mine, but mine sounds better. Mines sealed his is ported

it's all about your subs/amps/car
some vehicles sound like ass with ported boxes, some sound like ass sealed

Ported boxes are so hard to make sound right. I've built a few, and without hourse of calculations and configuring things, the box will sound like complete ass. You just can't take a ported box from one car and put it in another. Also, each ported box need to be built to the specs of the sub. Some subs require a longer port...some a shorter. Some require more space, some require less. I really prefer a sealed enclosure. Find out the size can necessary, and build it! It's gonna sound good as long as it's perfectly sealed and built to size. Can you make a ported box sound like a sealed punchy box? YES the only problem is that they never do because they're so hard to make right. IMO the coolest set up in our cars would be to make a ported box in the trunk with the ports aimed through the 6x9 holes to get bass in the cabin. That would be a tight set-up, but really hard to make sound right. That just my .02 though.

I am having a guy from the local car audio shop build me a ported box. He builds the box inside the trunk and calculates all the specs accorrding to the amps RMS power and to the subs RMS. My brother had him build one and it sounded so much better than his other box.
