View Full Version : A different window problem

Ever since I got my ga in February the driver window hasn't been right. It'd go up but to get it to totally seal I had to push it back before it went all the way up. Well the motor burned out and I took it out and replaced it. Ever since then it's been worse. Now it likes to fall out of track. Now mine is a 95. I got another regulator from a 96. I figured they were the same. But still the same. Actually now when it goes down it hits on the bar that is part of the door frame on the outer skin. And it looks like the regulator is bending in a spot. I'm wondering if maybe my track is borked or maybe the wrong window glass is in there. When it get's all the way up it fits fine. It's just getting it to go all the way up that's the prob. It really has to work. And I think that is what burned out the motor to begin with. For now (since it's getting cold out anyhow) I've unplugged the power to the motor so the window stays closed until sometime in January when I can get the cash to get another regulator and/or replace the track. I notice when I put the glass in after replacing the regulator that I have to push the regulator back to get the window clips to fit on the bar it bolts to.
Granted, when I got the car the window/regulator had been removed before as the regulator was bolted in. The rivets were already drilled out.
I know the motor itself is ok now. Just have to get this figured out.

The rear track has a screw/bolt adjustment on the bottom of it.
Fiddle with that so the glass runs true.
As you surmised, this is a major cause of the other failures.
Also, be sure to fully-lubricate the 'felt' of both tracks, using spray silicone lubricant.
NOT oil, WD-40, or other petroleum which will just smear across the vision area.
And, when you reassemble the regulator, grease all the tracks and scissors and other moving parts, and oil the axles of the pulleys.
This should help.

question for you on my 98 ga se coupe 2 door the passenger window when you power it down then try to power it up it falls down in side the door on an angle towards the front direction of the car. i believe the motor still works fine . just the windows drops down on an angle.

Well if the window glass is dropping then it can't be attached properly... I'd open 'er up and fasten the glass on properly.
Cage: Rule of thumb, never assume the reg is the same cuz its the same car. Truth is, there are SOOOOOO many engineering changes that take place in a reg design over the course of 6 months let alone a year. Every new model year is almost certain to produce a reg that is incompatible with previous model years in one way or another. Often the design is a carry over so it looks the same but there are subtle differences:
Pillar separation, glass dims, rail sweep/edge, sector runout/backlash, glass travel, door design, mounting hole position, list goes on...
If you think its bending it probly is...get the right reg for the car and model year. If the glass is falling out of the runs and channels, then bias the fastener below the pillar that holds the run in. Bias it forward (or aft depending on which direction makes the fit tighter) and retorque. Torque to 11 N-m if you can't find the spec but if you can find the spec use it. When fastening the glass a good trick is to stall the glass into the header and then fasten the glass, as the header will properly align the glass with the glass channels.

The '99+ models have a pair of plastic clips at the bottom of the glass, that attach the glass to the mechanism.
These plastic clips are f'ing NOTORIOUS for breaking, and IMO GM should do a voluntary recall and replace them all free-of-charge. Damned GM :banghead:
Anywho, GM won't replace them if yer out-of-warranty, so you must replace them.
Requires removing the inner door panel, which is a PITA but there's a 'sticky' thread of the procedure.
Also, do a 'search' for the procedure to replace the clips.
I've never done it, but I understand it's a bit tricky.
Any auto glass replacement shop is familiar with this problem and can repair it. Hell, it's so common they probably have the clips setting on the workbench. :roll2:
Good luck.

OK I don't have a problem with the glass itself falling out. It is secured on the track fine. It is binding in the track. I've had it disabled for the past month but that is what it was doing. I believe this is also why the motor burned out. The window would get stuck and the motor would keep going to try to push it up or pull it down. My plastic clips are fine. But I think the regulator is worn, the one I got. So I'm going to pull out the track and try to find where it's binding. But first I need to fix my blazer so this is going to wait.

If the glass travel distance or the curvature, most notibly or half a dozen other datums have changed between the years of your reg/car, then the binding will be pretty evident. A geometric tolerancing issue....no fix for that except replacement
