I'm installing a remote start on my wife's '00 Grand Am 2 door. I've put in a couple remote starts before on various vehicles but I've never put an add on unit it that uses the factory keyfob. The way this one works is it activates when it gets either a positive or negative signal 2 or 3 times depending on how you program it. Logically, I'd like to use a 2-3 pluse from the lock signal to start the car. The problem I'm having is this car's locks work off of a single wire using resistance so there's constant 12V to it. I tried using it as a negative plus because when I test the wire I pull ground from it when I hit the lock but that didn't work. I was thinking about using the horn output(but don't know where the wire is or if it's even a positive/negative plus itself). Also, can some tell me is this car has the GM Passlock on it. The key doesn't have one of those chips in it that I can see so I figured it doesn't have it but guess I could be wrong. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ok first thing there is a chip in her key.
Second here is a great web site for help. http://www.designtech-intl.com/
But it looks like that website no longer allowes anyone to just look at there wiring diagrams.
Here is the link for the form where I found out all the information.

I hope that helps you out, (oh yea you can find more wiring diagrams if you just do a search online)

Ugh, wrong.. there is no chip in the key. Passlock does not work with a chip in the key, it has to do with the igintion cylinder. You'll need a dei 555L to bypass it.
If you are using one of those addons, you have to realize that you are trying to tap the wires at the lock switches probably.. That won't work. The BCM gets the signal from the keyless entry and powers the lock motors themselves so there won't be any change on the switch wire...
I don't have a 99 BCM wiring diagram but for 2001, here is the lock stuff... get out your multimeter and test
BCM C3 Pink connector (24pin)
A2 - yellow - driver door lock relay unlock
A8 - light blue - door lock control
B3 - white - door unlock control

Than why can't you just get a key cut and start it with that key?...if there is nothing in the key

ok I looked around, some people say it has a chip and some people say it doesn't have a chip all I know for sure is that I drive a 92 and it does not have a chip in the key.

You can.
In the future don't give bad info if you aren't 100% sure

Thanks for the help guys. Got any links for a place to buy the module to bypass the Passlock?
Iceman, are you saying that light blue wire at the BCM will give me a positive or negative pluse at lock on the keyfob? Also, can I only tap into that in the door at the lock or can I access the wires in the kick panel?
Thanks again for the help guys.

The 3 different door lock wires Seth mentioned that are located in the pink plug on the BCM are + trigger. These wires can be easily accessed at the BCM which is located up under the passenger side under dash....SIMPLE to get at.
Granted the remote start can use a +/ - triger to be activated, but I honestly don't see that working that great with a factory transmitter. That feature is more for the remote starter to be used with an existing installed aftermarket keyless entry or Security system. I've done many set ups like this using all DEI equipment, its very easy to use.
If your planning using the factory fob, and hook the activation input up to the lock wire and had it set up to activate after 2-3 pulses, like you described in the original post, I'd imagine it would even activate by working the door lock switch on the door. In other words, if you hit lock 2 or 3 times on your door, the vehicle will remote start. I could be wrong, but thats what I figure would happen.
Granted it would be cool to retain the factory FOB, but
honestly it would be much more practical to just use a 561R, and have its remote control your keyless entry, and trunk pop, well as remote start. Definately keep me posted on how this works out for you.
You can pick up a 555L on ebay for example. They're pretty easily available. Or you can make your own with a resistor and a relay and save yourself a few bucks, but I, myself, would spen the money on the bypass. :)
As far as the "chip in the key" deal... Yeah. no chip in the key, therefor you can have a key cut at any hardware store, wal mart etc. Passlock 1 and 2 are resistance based and the chip, if thats what you want to call it, is in the key cylinder in the car. The BCM sees a certain resistance when the key is inserted in the ignition and allows the car to start.
Check yo'self befo ya wreck ya'self
PS I'm a MECP certified Installer. This is remote start season here in the NOrth East. lol I can't even escape remote starts when I come home to relax! lol j/k If there isanythign I can do to help anyone here out with their remote start questions, just ask.

Thanks for the explanation and help nineteen88ga, yeah, I figure you're right that the remote start would activate upon someone pushing the lock button in the car 2-3 times. But as long as I set it to say 3, I don't know why/when someone would push the button that many times. I honestly can't remember ever using the lock buttons inside the car anyways since it locks automatically when you start moving down the road.
I ordered the 555L last night on ebay. Hopefully it will get here pretty quick. I was hoping to have the system completely installed before the beginning of next week as an xmas present. Anything I need to know about location of wires or tech info on installing that bypass?
Again, thanks for the help.

your going to have to remove the radio. All your ignition wires as well as passlock wires are located to the left of the radio.

Oh, so I'm going to have to cut the wires I already connected to....ie the starter, heater, ingition 1 and 2, etc...

No. the passlock wires are located in the ignition harness. Should be Yellow, white and black.

Actually you can hit passlock at the BCM too :)

OK, I've got the DEI 555L now and was going to put it in today when I realized there are two different wiring diagrams depending if you have passlock I or II. Can anyone tell me which one is I have in a 2000 model GA?

Nevermind, Passlock II. Now hopefully I'm just looking at the right wires.

OK, took a couple week hiatis from this when it started giving me problems and xmas came up. I plan to try hopefully finish it up tomorrow. I'm not real sure what the issue is though. I've got the 555L all wired in now and the car still starts(good sign I guess) but I can't seem to get the Valet unit to activate. I didn't even hook up the negative wire. I tried to quickly ground it a couple times in a row to see if I got manually make it start the car but got nothing. Any suggestions where else to start tomorrow?
The unit is definitely getting power, it's letting me do the programming on it with the LED in the brain and whatnot, and I've double and triple checked ingition and starter wires as well as the ground and whatnot.
