I somehow think that GM missed a golden opportunity by passing on Fiat :)

The market value of Italy's Fiat, long regarded as the basket case of the European motor industry, has passed General Motors, the world's biggest carmaker by number of vehicles sold, for the first time on record.

With the exception of some German manufactures and high end Italian cars. What do the Europeans know about automobiles?

Just for starters they would have gotten Centro Ricerche Fiat and all the small car and fuel efficient technology that comes with it.

the Centro Ricerche Fiat conducts research on engines, vehicles, electronic systems, production processes and technical-managerial methodologies.
Over the years, the Centro Ricerche Fiat has gained renown for the excellence of its technical achievements, which have been rewarded with prestigious international awards: “The Economist Innovation Award – 2002” for the development of Common Rail Diesel engine technology; “Legambiente 2002”, for the Hybrid Methane Engine; and the “Ferrari Technology Awards” as the year’s best technical partner.
Among the company’s best achievements, particular mention must be made of the Multijet engine, developed in 2002 as the second generation Common Rail engine, with significantly improved performance, that currently powered the following models from the Fiat range: Panda, Stilo, Punto and Idea.
