I should scan in a couple pics of the ones I had ... the first one had a nice set Cragers on it and turned a low 18 second run (not bad for an underpowered 4-banger) and the other one I bought 'brand new' and I kept it SUPER CLEAN riding on a set of white letter tires mounted to the factory rally rims (not really 'rally' rims but it sounds better than 'stock' steel doesn't it :wink4:  ) ... anyway, believe it or not, the Chevette (or Acadian) was a great little, economical car that an owner could BEAT and it would last and last and last :)

.. I'll see if I can find them (the two I mentioned above were an 81 and 87 respectively) ... the Scooter was actually the BASE model WITHOUT any options (in fact, they didn't even come with a glove box door :wink4:  ) typically purchased by people looking solely for transportation or by delivery purposes.

They were still bullt better than any Honda, Toyota, or GM that is built today! I tried to kill my old Acadian, but no success! Even sugar in the gas tank didn't work!

Chevy Chevette. Not sure of the first and last year, but pretty common through the '80s.
There is a Chevette that comes to car shows around here (I haven't seen it) my couisin said it had a 350 in it. Can you imagine what you would have to go through to get a 350 in that car. Must have been a PITA!!!

lol, a few years ago Car Craft did a salvage yard build up. They took a Chevette and dropped a Caddy 500 into it. Well not just drop, but should I say hacked and cobbed. Either way it ran 12's for under $2000. lol

... quite a common swap around here was a 305 but an close second was a rear wheel drive 2.8 that was quite easy to fit in :)

my mother had a few Chevettes, not the worst car, becuase it got great millage (like 35mpg even 15 years old) never died but was horribly underpowerd (I remember trying to climb to mountain to West Point becuase my mother would go to the BX and other place up there for food and stuff-she was in the ANG) and it would be floored, in first gear and doing 15mph or so. it was pretty bad.
Funny you mention is though, I was just looking at Chevettes on ebay, check it out. they are RWD, so that is a nice start, and the engine compartment could actually hold a 350 pretty easy, that and a decent 4speed and you have the start to a fast car (even a V6 turbo works well)
mmmmmmmm Caddy 500 + 2000lbs car= yeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhawwww
that would be sweet (Caddy 500= one of the best engines ever made :D )

During their day, both of these cars were SUPER CLEAN and were PERFECT RIDES for the teenager ... meaning ... no power :) , easy on gas and was very reliable!! :)

Well, yes and no ... at one time, there was actually BOTH an Acadian and a T1000 ... the 'sales pitch' on either was that the T1000 was more more elaborate with respect to options (like sport mirrors, cloth interior, tilt, cruise, A/C, etc) ... actually, my 1987 Acadian was a T1000 with Acadian badges (there was a T1000 manual in the dash and it had many of the standard T1000 options not normally available on a standard Acadian) :)

that's the funny part, the cloth seats were the EXTRA OPTION
lol
actually, from what I remember (like 8+ years ago) the interrior was very, very bare....I don't even think it had carpet, but the doors were just plain metal etc... it was purly designed to be a few people from point A to point B as cheap as possible, and that's all. I would hate to see AC, I mean the thing was slow enough to begin with.
but they are great project cars, like we were saying before, RWD, considerable good size engine bay and you can have some fun with them...

sure they were a great car, but to repair one was a PITA, it took us 4 days to change the starter and 3 days for a clutch, and thats with 3or4 mechanics

lol, my age is correct.... I just remember them (my mother had 2 or 3 and then a parts one)
they were crazy to work on, you had to take half the engine apart just to change one thing.
I was bored so just typing various cars at epinions.com and reading the reviews, alot of people said the 1.6L in the Chevette although very, very underpowerd and weak lasted forever, and would just never die.... so one guy said that he heard from a friend that worked at GM (high up guy) that GM used to dyno the engine until they blew up, he said the 454 lasted 10min at full-throttle, the 350 lasted about a half hour when they tested the 1.6L they had it on the dyno running WOT for a week before GM pulled the plug on it becuase they got tired of the noise..... he said he dosn't know how true it is....but I wonder if they really did that and if the 1.6L kept going....

Hmmm ... that is twice now that I read about how hard the Chevettes were to work on and to be honest, I have NO IDEA what you guys are talking about ... to me, they were easy as hell and you could fix almost anything on them with a "stick and a roll of mechanics wire" (well, not literally but you know what I mean) ... I do agree about them running forever as my 1981 Acadian (the blue one I posted) is still running as I seen it late last year and it had almost 400,000 miles on it :)
