I had the SE transmission flushed and serviced today at AAMCO.
There was lots of metal shavings in the pan.
They said that the trans might need to be rebuilt or replaced soon.
I havent had any problems with the trans yet.

Just in case it start to act up, I want to have a trans on hand to put in it.
What other years will work in a 99 SE?
I would luv to stick a GT trans in it, but I don't think it would work with the SE computer?

all the 99-05 V6 transmissions are the same. GT trans just has a different FDR.

They are all 4t45e transmissions. 99-05 will work.

So an 05 GT transmission will work with an 99 SE computer?
I thought that the engine and trans was controlled by the computer?

they are all the same transmission with the same electronics. as long as it's a V6 transmission from any alero or grand am, from 99-05, it will work fine.

i work at aamco transmission there is a difference in trannys it just depends on what motor u have. If is the 4 cyl then its a 4t40e if its the 3.4 its the 4t45e. The bell housings are different and if u do decide to get another trans on the differential housing there should be a tag ur lookin for 3 letters they go from top to bottom those letters should match the trans u decide to get.

is that difference in final drive ratio a gear difference or some how computer controlled? he may need a SE trans, I'm not sure just want to ask the question before he buys a GT trans and can't use it without a computer reprogram.

the electronics on the 05 trans is diff due to a few of the driver shift control features, and i wouldnt use anything newer than an 04 due to a few different issues with the way some of the electronics works. if you use the different FDR i dont think it will matter, since the sensors are the same and everything else is compensated by inputing the actual input and output speeds, but the only thing you need to look at is the 4t40 trans will have very different gearing than the 4t45, the 4t40 will come with either a 35/35 chain drive, or the 4 cyl versions i believe either had a 33/37 and a 32/38 chain drive with the 3.05 FDR, which would give about 3.42 and 3.63, or with the 3.29 FDR you can use the same chains and go 3.69 and 3.91, but there would be no need to change anything on the tuning just for the swap in terms of speed, because gear ratio is automatically determined and the output is the actual output of the trans and the output to the drive wheels, if it were a RWD it would need to be changed

the only thing that needs to be changed if going with diff gear ratios is the input shaft speed sensor, there is one for the normal 35/35 chain and the other works for both the 32/38 and the 33/37 chain
