A specially outfitted 2006 Corvette Z06 will serve as the official pace car of the 48th running of the Daytona 500, on Feb. 19. “Tonight Show” host and auto enthusiast Jay Leno will drive the pace car.

... as much as I like North American cars, this was a little bit too predictable and I would have preferred something else ... believe it or not, some totally different such as a Honda would be cool to see :)

Whoa... wait wait wait. I'm not at all a race fan, of ANY particular kind. But if you're talking about a Honda pacing a Nascar series... that's pretty strange. Wouldn't it continue to make sense for a sponsor company to actually participate in the pace? I have no problem with Honda supplying pace cars for Indy or whatever else they run in, but Nascar? You're strange.

I thought that Honda or Toyota was thinking about running a Nextel cup car in NASCAR?

Toyota runs in the Craftsman series. Hadn't heard of plans of them committing to race in the Nextel yet.

“The three day show runs thru 5 p.m. Sunday, January 15th with more than 40,000 people are expected to visit. Toyota is expected to announce, as soon as 2007, that they will be active in NASCAR Busch and Nextel Cup racing.”

I did a search, and started reading about how Toyota bullies its way into racing markets. They've lobbied Nascar to allow them to have overhead cam engines, and different engine sizes other then 8 cylinders, fuel injection, and all this crap. They claim they won't be able to compete as well because they don't as much carburator experience. I really hope there are no concessions made to allow them in. Either play by the existing rules or stay out. Preferably stay out.

No matter what though, they still have to comply to the XXX amount of horsepower, like all the others, right?

I mean, the Camry is the best selling sedan in America, and motorsports are there to sell cars, especially in racing like N.A.S.C.A.R. Im suprised it took this long. Really though, its been the same 3 manufactuers for what, 50 years? Mix it up a little!

Eh, it's just that they expect the sport and it's rules to be changed for them. Seems a little self serving. I'd assume they would have to still abide by other rules, unless they're seeking to change those as well, but I didn't come across anything like that.

Basically I say join the sport how it is, or leave it like it is, but don't make it to change just for you Toyota.

I think NASCAR ought to drop the Toyota trucks. Keep the sport pure American.

I agree. And no automaker uses carburators anymore, so why does toyota feel they have a disadvantage? Doesn't their trucks have V8s? So all they need is a engine builder that can tune a big CFM carburator, not that difficult in that market. BEsides, the rumor is anyhow that Nascar is expected to see FI come into the game in 5 years or so. I guess alot of teams have engineers currently looking into this as a possibility.

a little off topic of the Nascar trucks, but for Nascar Cars they now have three, used to be 4, No more Pontiac in Nascar....:???: :idunno: :tears:

and Nascar started with American muscle cars didn't it??? Back when Toyota's and honda's were more of a sportscar, and ford and GM we're pure muscle????
