When i was detailing my engine compartment the other day, I noticed what a mess the insulation under the hood looked. I hosed it out pretty thoroughly, but after it dried it still looks bad. Besides just taking it out, is there any good way to get this clean? I cant think of any way to clean it.

You and I both have the same problem - except you had the courage to remove it and try to clean it. I never got further than spraying it with cleaner and hosing it off - which did nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if it not too expensive to just rip it out and have a new one put in. I think it's some kind of fiber or insulatiion - how expensive could it be? I don't know of any way to get the damn thing clean, but that won't stop me from either trying to find out a way, or getting a new one.

Many people I know remove it and give it several coats of flat black spray paint.

... mine is clean but it is only because I don't drive me car ... anyone ever check to see how much money a NEW one is worth?!? Maybe a person could have one for winter driving and another for summer

Flat black spray paint, huh? I'll have to look into what kind I can use, that'll be safe for an engine - with the high heat and all.

I never thought of using paint

I know it's there to protect against heat damage but what about just removing it? My old Nova SS had its removed and there was no heat damage to the hood.

Yeah, I'm sure it makes no difference if it is there or not...go to a dealer (I've been there plenty during service appointments and had time to root around) and you'll see that a SC/T equipped GA with the SC/T hood has no insulation anyway.

Most the cars I have seen dont have the insulation either.

I'd rather have the SC/T hood, if I could get it right now.......
But, I can't.
Maybe I'll just live with it for now, and just get the SC/T hood when I can.

From what I know, it protects the hood from getting too much engine heat and to keep engine noise down.
I painted mine 2 years ago, stenciled in "GT" in silver on it too. Now, there's a 12" x 12" spot that is kind of falling apart. I just painted it again and it looks good enough :D
