I think it depends, I personally went for subs first.
I wanted to enjoy my car while I'm in it before I let other people enjoy looking at it.

if you go subs, try earthquakes. thats what i use for speakers and subs. Great quality. I never blew a sub or a speaker. Earthquakes you have the assurance of knowing they are american made and not some speaker made in sweatshops over seas. plus the guy i get them from gives me the warranty from earthquake and his extended warranty. Anything happens to the speakers in 5 years i return them no questions asked for brand new ones.
