I need struts in my 96 grand am gt 3.1. I was quoted $477 for Monroe Struts with installation and alignment. Is this reasonable or overpriced?

When I needed a new strut for my car it was around $250 for just one. So if you are in the US, the price doesn't sound overpriced.

Call around in your area. It might be the going rate.

i know in the shop i work at we charge roughly 50 dollars per strut to install it and the struts for the ga are around 45 dollars a strut and its always a good idea to replace the strut mounts too and those are about 20 dollars each. The ga has struts in the front and shocks in the rear so shocks cost about 25 dollars each.
The cost to install shocks in the shop i work at is 18 dollars each.
Shock mounts i believe are about 15 dollars each.
so we'll say 136$ for labor on both struts and shocks installed
90$ for the two front struts
50$for the shocks
40$ for the strut mounts
30$for the shock mounts
40$ for front end alignment
50$ for four wheel alignment
so if you had the both front struts and rear shocks done with a front end alignment you would be looking at 386 dollars plus tax. Price includes labor and parts.
now if you wanted just front struts done and didn't have to have the mounts replaced you would be looking at about 230$ plus tax. If you wanted the four wheel alignment add ten dollars to those prices so you would pay 240 or 396. It all depends on what you want done and what really should be replaced and done. so 477 is kind of high priced but if they are including alignment ,labor and parts its not too bad but you have to take into consideration what this shops labor rate is,price of the alignment, and parts. Not all shops carry parts and sometimes have to pay more for the part from an outside parts house(I.E CSK,Auto zone etc) so in turn they charge the customer more.
Now if you were having the work done at the shop where i work and we stocked the part for your car and happened to be out of it at the time and we had to get it from somewhere else and even though we pay more for it you would get the part at our price. Example struts 45$each ,oops were out of stock but normaly stock that strut, we pay 65$ for it from say autozone....you still pay 45$ for it .
not too long ago i wrote up an estimate for a customer for a suspension check and they said we want everything brand new. It was a 98 grand am and it would have cost them about 500-600 to have everything replaced, all new struts, shocks, mounts, sway bar repair kit(bushings etc)labor and alignment. So keep in mind i was quoting you from my knowledge of prices and they do change from time to time. Hope this helps you out some.
Biggest thing is check around on prices and some places may be lower priced but quality isn't that great or vice versa.

Personally it is not that hard of a install myself and just pay for alignment.
Shocks... 31.99
Struts... 39.99
alignment 45.00 all 4
So you could get the whole thing done for under $200.00
EDIT: sorry that was for GABRIEL
Struts KYB $67.19
Struts Monroe $61.95
You will save yourself a lot of money doing it yourself.
I just change the struts on my wifes Town and Country which is a lot harder than my 97... just make sure you rent the strut tool to compress the springs.. most places will give you your money back when you return the too.
