ok, i have 40 series flows w/ 2.5" pipes to the cat, it sounds nice, but i want something louder, something that turns heads, not that mine dosent already, but something that scares runners when i go by and rev my engine, lol, anyways i know some people that have done this have had problems with their O2 sensor not being in place and their check engine light coming on....anyways anyone ever do this on the 3.1L, how does it sound? i want your opinion if you have done this, i dont want opinions about people saying "dont do it" or "its gonna be too loud" ....also has anyone tried perofrmance cats...?? does that change sound also?

Am sure you can do it... your just going to have to find somekinda way to bypass that O2 thing :)

I dont think it's going to affect the sound of your exhaust very much. The resonator is the key there. Although I'm assuming you already removed it. Just keep the CAT on, it's more trouble than it's worth and you wont see any performance gain out of removing it.

i disagree if you take the converter off it will be alot louder

The exhaust will sound the same way it does when the engine is cold except louder and you will lose a chunk of low-end torque. I'd say you'll be better off with a hi-flow cat which will give you some extra power, you won't lose low-end torque and it will make your exhaust tone a little deeper.

you live in cali right? dont they do emisions tests yearly or more offten? if so its gonna be a ton more problems than you want! maybe make a straight pipe with bolt flanges so like when you dont have emisions you can unbolt it and then bolt it back in. still i would just go with a hi-flow cat. shouldnt have any problems with emisions laws.

A high-flow cat will definitely be better - there's no way it's gonna get past a CARB emissions test without one, even if you were to use an 02 sensor bypass.

And if I remember correctly, using a "test" pipe or bypass pipe will also fail your car. You might want to check your local regs on this, but I get the feeling from recent SCC articles that all emissions-control equipment that is on the car has to be original or better, and a test pipe would violate that.

you will loose your backpressure which our motior is designed to have, so you might loose hp

Check this out as an alternative to removing the cat.

If you still have the resonator on it leave that on and take off the flowmasters. Thats what i did and it sounds great and loud!

Dude, if you want louder, but like the flowmaster tone, then just get rid of yours and get either the 30series or the original 40's (not the deltaflows).

ok, well i have the exact same setup as you peyman, 2.5" piping, flowmaster 40 series, but i took my cats off. and im a little tired of hearing people saying your gonna lose too much backpressure, cuz first off you will gain so much in top end the less restrictive it is that its incredible. and im now almost positive i gained low end even with my setup, all of my friends that have been in the car, around the car, know that it did not lose any torque. hell i mean, last night i raced my friends laredo, i took that thing the whole time. yeah, well during school, he took me off the line and all the way up til 25. he saw nothing but me in front of him the whole time last night. so i say man, if you dont care about the whole emission testings or whatever (we dont have them here) take those cats off.

I know on a 4-cyl you'll definatly lose your low end without a cat and I know on an 8-cyl you'll just gain. I guess on the 6's you lose some and you win some. You got any sound clips of your setup? I want to hear how mean it sounds.

i can try to use my mp3 player to record it, lets just say, my friend with a 5.0 with flows, said mine is louder than his. and i want to remove my rev limiter so i can make it even louder.
