Wheel Offset

One thing I never really took the time to totally understand is wheel offset. Just from my recent browsing I've seen 35 and 45 seem to be the most comment measurements for FWD's, at least on Grand Ams. Can somone help explain the defference between them.

My 17's have a offset of 38mm
