Ok heres the deal,

I bought the car for $800 and have basically replaced everything in it, and it runs like new. Unfortunatly, it looks like a pile of crap!

The previous owner made a really big mess of the car. He ripped off and discarded the side moldings, then he ground the hood and door panels down to bare metal and did a crappy job painting them, so as a result paint is peeling off the car and it has rust spots forming on the hood and sides of the doors. The paint thats still on the car on the sides and hood is transparent. the roof and rear end are the only decent looking spots on the car, but even they have some blemishs.

my budget is about $500 for materials.

I was thinking if I do the body work myself I could get someone to throw a couple coats of paint on it for fairly cheap.

problem is I dont know anything about body work or where to start. im thinking about grinding down the bad areas to metal, applying bondo, sanding it all down smooth, then spraying multiple light coats of primer on it and sanding some more, then taking it up to get it painted. Is that a good idea? or is there more too it?

would appreciate advice on how to do this up properly without wasting a ton of $. I want the car to look good, and I dont want the paint to fall off!!

it may be easier/cheaper to find the panels and hood at a junkyard, Im willing to bet you could find something that is in better condition than that for less than 500$

I went outside today armed with some sandpaper and some gloss white spray paint.

the rust came off easily, it appears to be just surface rust.

the panels are solid, no holes in them at all, its all surface rust. I covered it up temporarily for now, until the weather gets better.
