Most 3100 and 3400 parts are interchangable. You just need to switch the throttle linkages in which there are directions to do so towards the end of the 3400 swap guide at www.3400swap.com
The older 3100's (94-98) had 52mm TB's while the newer 3100's (2000+) and all 3400s had 56mm TB's.
If it's a stock TB your friend ordered it'll be a direct bolt on. If it's a larger bore unit (62mm?) then you'll need to port the inlet of your upper intake manifold (stock is ~58mm) to get the most gain out of it.

the intake manifold is 52mm, just like the stock TB - not 58mm. you should port-match it even with a 56mm unit. why wouldn't the upper intake size match the stock TB?? GM does funny stuff sometimes but their engineers aren't completely daft.
the 3400 TB may have a coolant line on it to warm the TB, which 3100's don't have. you can just cap it off with no worries. the sensors are interchangeable.
get your buddy's manifolds and heads if he's not going to do anything with the engine - you can swap the whole top end for a 10-15hp gain.
if you port it out to match, be wary of metal shavings getting into the engine. either stuff a rag in the intake while you work or take the UIM off to do the porting.

well.....he is buying his GAGT back i think, buying a jbody and turboing his 3400 after swaping it with the jbody......will be 1 heck of a project for him but since he has all the parts for the turbo he just needs his 3400 from his GA...
