OK, I want to Zymol my car again. I am used to putting on only one coat, but is that enough? How many do you all recommend? Does it really have a positive effect on putting more than 1 coat on or am I just wasting the wax?
Thanks for all opinions/advice.

I put wax/polish on one coat at a time.

Once you clean/polish/wax your car really good, it's already nice and as shiney as much as it can be. Adding 2 coats might do something, but 5 is not going to do anything(even though it states on the meguires gold class wax- the more coats you put on the more gloss). Puting on more polish might do something?

Well, if you keep the car waxed (wax and polish are different, lets not forget) at least once a year, you'll probably find that your finish will still get a bit dull. Usually you'll want to clay bar the old wax off using automotive conditioner, (about once a year) and then Wax it using whatever you prefer.
Waxing need only be done once or twice a year, as long as it's done right, and in 2-3 coats if you have a wintery climate (salt and ropad grime causes a LOT of swirling). Otherwise only one is fine.
As far as polishing goes, I'd do it sparingly. I've used Zymol with good results, but it was after I put on a good coat of carnuba wax. So, I'd do this:
1: Clay bar thoroughly
2: Wax with carnuba based wax
3: Polish weekly with Zymol.
4: Condition/Clay bar after 6 months.
5: Repeat as necessary.
Depending on what you use for wax, zymol may help/Hurt. I've found great results mainly using carnuba... Petroleum distillate based waxes typically don't react well with Zymol, or they have poor results.

clay bar is safe if its done right.
Polish is what gives the paint its deep wet looking shine.
Wax is what does the protecting and gives it some shine too.
I use the 3 step process...cleaner,polish, wax. Works sweet for $20
meguires works good all on cars, especially on dark ones(They use a black car in the commercial).

depending on the amount of rain, and the number of times you wash your car, you will likely need a LOT more than 1-2 coats of wax a year!!
with washing my car 1-2 times weekly, the mejuiars gold class only lasts about a month MAX, and the mothers carnauba 1.5-2 months I think.

What's the right order? It sounds like you wax then polish. I use Gold Class and will have 2 coats on before spring is over. Then I just keep the tires looking cool on my '03 Black GT...

1. First you wash the car
2. Then you use that cleaner stuff (step 1)
3. Next you polish (step 2)
4. Finally you wax gold class (step 3)

Heres the steps i use on my car.
1. Wash the car with Meguiars car shampoo
2. Dry with a Chamois
3. Use Meguiars Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner
4. Use Meguiars Deep Crystal System Polish
5. Use Meguiars Deep Crystal System Carnuba Wax
6. Then I add some Meguiars Gold class Wax
I do steps 3-4 only once a month and steps 1-2 whenever it needs it then i do step 6 once every 2 weeks cause my Meguiars car care sheet told me we get bad acid rain in my city.
If you want you can customize your car care plan at meguiars's site at : Meguiars Car Care RX (http://www.meguiars.com/CarRx.cfm)
They suggest their products to use based on your conditions and time willing to spend.

I dont use a clay bar but for ne one that does do you notice a difference in shine or texture of the paint.
Oh and one more thing if you wax ur car and it is a newer one make sure you buy clear coat safe wax if you have clear coat. If you buy the wax that is not safe for the clear coat you may badly scratch the surface.

I like bryman's method, although I'd first wash the car with Dawn dishwashing soap, because the ingedients in it will break down old waxes and better prepare the finish to accept the new one. Don't wash the car with Dawn all the time, unless you want to keep re-applying coats of wax. Depending on where you live and what brand of wax you're using will dictate how often and how much wax you need to use.
