I accidently ran into a Glitch about the Grand Am when I was selling off the aftermarket parts off of my GA...a friend wanted to buy my Flamed Guages off me...so we met up one night and Exchanged Guage clusters!

When I started my car up my odometor read 81,000 miles instead of 59,000 miles...I went over to his car and his was showing 59,000 miles instead of 81,000!

When i got thinking about this it made no sense to me at all why the Computer that controls the Mileage of the car was put in the Guage cluster itself!

"IF" someone wanted to beat the Mileage system of a lease or keep the Miles low on the car all they would have to do is go to the Junkyard and buy a Guage cluster out of the same year car and replace your's with that!

It kinda seems wierd that GM would make it that easy for Mileage Fraud...if someone didn't car about anything and did that then Replaced the original back in the car whenever you had your car serviced ect...how the hell would GM know that was done?

but now that I brought this up to your attention....you might want to look into a "Used" 99+ Grand Am with low miles a little bit closer in case the seller found out about this! :agree:

HAhaha so now your car is going back to GM with 81,000 on it?
lol I hope they try to auction it off now. On that note I hope it doesn't end up costing you anything.

lol...nope

when i found out about this I freaked out and exchanged back the Guage to the original so nothing would come of it...so GM got the flamed Guages with 1 missing screw...lol

This is surprising news. I thought the Odometer reading was stored in the BCM. It's strange that it would do that.

Whether it is or not...if someone wanted to they could sell the car on ebay showing 10,000 miles instead of 120,000 miles! it would probably be too late by the time they realized the car accually had the 120,000 miles...This thing does not make sense to me!

same thing with any analogue odometer, like my 95.. I can just swap it out..

what if you kept the guages our for a long time.. eventually the capacitor or whatever that is storing the mileage would die out, would it just reset to 0??

no because it is flashed into the memory meaning stored forever until it is updated.

It is stored in the cluster for display. It is also stored in the DERM (Airbag module), which is something you can't fake. A simple check with a scan tool will reveal the vehicles actual mileage.

yes so as a note anyone who plans on trying this could very well be caught.
Remember it is fraud and illegal to do anything to effect the milage readings.

On that note Troy your car now has it's original gauges in it correct?
