Hey, I'm pretty new to the forums, and really to cars in general. I got a 96 ga se recently and am starting to play around with it. I just installed a cai, and am looking for a muffler... thats another story though.

Anyways, I just spend a couple hundred bucks on a new sound system that sounds great.... when the cars not moving fast. Thing is, theres no fun in driving unless it's fast. The problem of course is the amount of road noise is crazy. I am looking for some inexpensive (ha!) ways to reduce the road noise. I've already lined my trunk with dynamat and sprayed my wheel wells with a undercoat that reduces sounds (seems to help a little bit). Any help would be great. Thanks!

Put Dynamat or similar (a similar product is called "Ice and Water Shield," and you can find it (or the same kind of stuff) in most decent hardware stores for pretty cheap -- it's mostly used for roofing) under all of the carpet.

Yea, I was thinking about that. Didn't really want to rip up all thte carpet... looks like I might have to now.

you done anything to the firewall? how about some kind of underbody coating?

Yea I've been spraying underbody coating which seems to do a little bit. Takes a lot to make any noticable difference though. Guess I will do more of that as well. The "This product can give you cancer" warning on the back is a little ominous however... I haven't done anything to the firewall. What could I do to reduce noise coming through?

crank up your audio more!! lol What type of a system do you have? After all the noise reduction that you have done maybe your being kinda picky and not taking into consideration that you have a 10 year old car.

just get some hoodliner type stuff......or really any kind of sound deadener, just make sure it can take the heat.

and yeah, you're not going to get the car as quiet as a library. it is 10 years old and it is a pontiac grand am.........not a lexus :P i dont believe i've ever seen a car that didnt have any roadnoise

It works, possibly not 100% as good as Dynamat. Maybe 80% as good? Not positive, I haven't compared side-by-side, but I do know it works.

Hmm... ok I'll keep dynamatting then. I know im being picky but it doesn't hurt to try and deaden the noise a bit. Thanks guys!

My 2001 GT is horrendous with road noise. I've dynamatted the doors, and am seriously thinking about doing the hood and floors. I don't think it will help much, though. If anyone has a better idea how to quiet it down, let me know.

:???: mine sounds quiet as far as cars go. Now comparing them to a truck or SUV I could see where your going, but I've never thought of my car as loud

I wonder is it possible to use some of that spray in insulation on the pillars.

Got the idea seeing a commercial for the new Ford F150.

Dynamat works awsomely.

I found a really really cheap way to help a lot with road noise is to use the black industrial carpets on the floors. You know what i'm talking about the ones with the rubber on one side black/grey carpet on the other and it's damn heavy.

i have used the spray on sound insulation stuff that is kinda like dynamat.. you can get it at any stereo shop that sells dynamat. goes for about 10 bucks a can. just take the plastic pillars off and spray the back side of them if you don't want to cover up the paint or spray both that and the metal. just make sure to mask everything up.

Dynamat for sure. I have my entire truck covered with a layer of it. I cost me about 400 bucks but its well worth it if you are serious about your sound. Ever notice how in the Overhaul show or Hot Rodz shows how they completely cover the inside of the car with Dyanmat? Its highly recommended by any Professional installer, myself included. I have Installed into thousands of cars and I always have customers come back to get the Dynamat installed even after I told them they should do it in the first place. Just get it done and be happy lol.

In terms of cost I'm pretty lucky since I work at best buy. Get a 90$ pack of dynamat for about 17 bucks. Walletsaver!

well for people who really are on a budget. that spray on stuff that i'm talking about works pretty damn good. i sprayed nearly the entire trunk after taking all the carpeting out. i just have to spray the back half where the tail lights are. and the whole trunk doesn't rattle anymore. the only thing that rattles is the rear deck lid. i didn't spray the underside of the trunk... contemplating doing that or not not sure. only because you can see it when you open the trunk and i don't want that. maybe when i'm through with the fiberglassing and i go to paint it.. i might do it then paint it to match the interior of the trunk.

I just got back from my internship with Walt Disney World, and applied and got a job at Best Buy in Noblesville until my job at Midwest Model Makers picks up again. I applied, got a interview with Best Buy within two days, and did the interviews back to back. They made me take a drug test and told me that it would take 3 to 5 days for everything to get back in. It's been a week and a half, and i haven't heard anything from anyone. I've even called the place nearly every day, just to hear that the person in charge of hiring isn't there.

I find best buy (or atleast the best buy in noblesville) completely out of order and unorganized. I want the job, but I just dont know what in gods name is going on there.

Oh, and right as I got home, I worked at Frys Electronics for a week, but they suck, lol.

Store 24, NorthRidge Wisconsin! Going on 7 months right now. I like it so far... especially employee price. Ask to talk to either the GM or the HR guy. Usually takes a week or so to get the tests back, then another week for them to setup a date for a training. Good luck though, its a good place to work.
