View Full Version : UnderDrive/Lightened Crank Pulley
c3hp0

Didn't look too hard, but it looks like there hasn't been a group buy for an underdrive and/or lightened crank pulley for some time.
I am interested, but haven't contacted any vendors.
The Fast Forward unit looks pretty good and from what is discussed here and elsewhere they fixed the crank sensor interference problem.
So, who's interested?

Update - found what looks to be the last group buy in the fall of 2004: http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32067&highlight=pulley
Time for another?

Unsure of what can be worked out, nor who will take this forward (I haven't committed to anything, yet, just looking for interest), but anything's up for consideration at this point.

I'm definitely interested if it's for a 3400... Especially so if it's FFP...

For the 3400, depending on the price, you can count me in.

Even at full price the UDP is well worth it!!!. Just make sure you know how to install it (which isn't all that hard) before you buy. :)
I already have one, so I'm not looking to buy, but to let you guys know that the unit from FFP is very nice. faster revs, better top end pull, and smoother shifts.
When you buy the UDP you'll need a smaller serp belt as well. I went with the Gatorback Belt, part #: 4060855 and works perfectly :)

I would be in for a FFP group buy.I was planning on buying one in the next couple of months anyways. Trav

FFP would probably be the best since they have one that fits many engines.
Depending on the price and when it happens I might be interested, depends it I have the money to do it.

I've contacted FFP and the prices are 10% off up to 14 pulleys, 15% off for 15 or more pulleys.
They unfortunately don't have pulleys for the 2.4l engine.

I'll be posting this group purchase info on other sites in the hopes that we can raise our numbers well above 15 so we can be sure to qualify for the maximum discount. If you know of someone who may be or is interested, send them a note to sign up.
It appears that aluminum prices have gone up, as have some labor costs, but the web prices have not yet reflected those increases, so the sooner we get this done, the better. The group buy ends on Monday March 20, end of day.
I'm waiting on some more information and will post it when I receive it.

I posted a link to this on the V6z24.com site. Since they have 3400 swapped Cavalier/Sunbirds.
Hope it helps.
I'd put my name down but I don't know when this will be ready to order and I may not have the Cash. I'll add my name when I can.

I don't think the 3800 is internally balanced...so the Crank Pulley is actually weighted IIRC.
They probably don't make one for them.

That's a pretty good list, guys (gals?), but as with all group buys, there are invariably some who do not go through with it. I'd say we're realistically only looking at between 18 and 20 actually purchasing at this point, but you never know until it happens.
So, crank up your contact lists and visit those boards where you know this pulley will fit - 2.8, 3.1 MPFI and 3100, 3400 SFI, since I clearly don't know all the forums.
Thanks for your participation and welcome aboard!

Ok, the deal stands as is. As I mentioned or alluded to already, the price will be going up very soon due to cost increases for material and labour.
I'm just now asking about the dogbones and I'll let you know when I get some information.
In terms of payment, I'll be compiling a list of people to submit by 5:00 P.M. MST with each person's GAOC ID, full name, address, phone number, email address, and payment type (CC or PayPal). After I send the list to FFP, people can call with their credit card number or they can send a paypal payment.
So, I need information from each of you (GAOC ID, full name, address, phone number, email address, and payment type - CC or PayPal), which you can send to me at c3hp0@hotmail.com. Once the list has been sent, I'll advise everyone here and will send a phone number out by email.
Shipping is not included in the price and can be found on their website. I assume tax will be collected only for those in Colorado, which is where they are located.
None of the product will ship out until all payments have been received.

so how much are the pullys goin to end up costing?
c3hp0
03-11-2006, 01:24 PM
Provided that a minimum 15 units are paid for, they'll cost 93.49 USD plus shipping. You can't beat that price for a proven part like this.
QuadPoWah
03-11-2006, 01:34 PM
The only way I can pay is by Money order or cashiers check, will that work? I don't have a credit card.
What if we do end up having 20-25 buyers? Won't the price go down more?
c3hp0
03-11-2006, 01:43 PM
I'll ask about the money order, since that method is listed on the site, but your order will likely delay the final paid count, unless you ship it early. I'll find out for you.
The price won't go down anymore, since his costs have gone up (i.e. he is making less on them at full price now) - I've asked more than once (i.e. in more than one way). 5 percent more off is $5.50 and I'm not going to delay the GP and spend a whole swack more time chasing five and a half bucks. These pulleys are already a good deal at full price, and group buys on these things only happen once every few years, if one will ever happen again.

BTW, if you're not from this forum, please get the word out that I need an email with particulars to take an order forward. It's getting to be too much to visit all (approx.) dozen forums repeatedly.
Without particulars and the representative tombstone mark (dagger in brackets), a name on the list doesn't mean participation in the group buy.
Thanks.
P.S. Anybody know what happened to n-body.net? I haven't been able to reach the site in a couple of days.

03-13-2006, 06:51 PM
Cut off is 5:00 PM March 20.
I don't believe their shipping costs are posted. I was quoted $10 USD for continental US and $15 USD for Canadian orders.
Money orders are acceptable, but we won't be sending them out until after the 20th.
You can order mounts and FFP will ship them with your pulley - that's about the best I can do for you on that one. Stock is quite limited on the mounts (not pulleys, as originally posted), and the website will be updated shortly. I'm leaving each of you to arrange to purchase your mounts outside of the GP for the pulley and indicate to FFP that you'd like them shipped with the Pulley. Michael at FFP will be getting my list of information that I'm collecting, so he can match up the orders that way.
For those who haven't sent me the contact information yet, you have another week, but you dont' have to wait until then.
Thanks.

GroovyGT, I need your GAOC screen name(mine is c3hp0), full name, address, phone number, email address, and payment type - CC or PayPal emailed or PM'd to me to add to "the list," which guarantees you a spot in the Group Purchase.
If anyone has emailed me with their detailed information and not seen a tombstone next to their name, you may have to PM me since I have a junk mail filter not accepting from some big domain names (yahoo, sbcglobal, for e.g.).

The amount is correct, unless you live in Colorado, then you have to add whatever tax there may be.
Hold off on sending payment in - I'll post instructions for purchasing after the 20th date/time.
We don't get the discounts unless we reach the discount levels of paid purchasers - 10 to 14 paid for 10 percent, 15 and more for 15 percent. If we hit 15 (or more) with credit cards and Paypal, then we're good to go. If not, we'll deal with it at that time.

I could use paypal, but then it'd take about a week (more over about 10 days) for the payment to get the money from my bank account and then send it to them.
If they are alright with that I can use paypal.

It's not credit card, it's debit card. It's sent via echeck and it takes around 10 days for the recipient to receive the payment.

From FFP:
You can make the money order out to Fast Forward Performance. Include personal info (name address, etc) and "UDP Group Buy" on the money order. The address to send the payment to is on the site.
I was not available at all today. Do not leave credit card info in my voice mail unless you are comfortable doing so (I would not recommend it).

Right, Ok then, excuse the fact that I've been trying to do this from work and didn't take the time to read every single post because I was trying to do my job at the same time. Michael isn't the only person in the world that is busy. And as for being lazy, if it's too much trouble for you to check your spam folder for people trying to BUY something, I guess I'm not the only one in the club. :roll2:
Secondly, I sent the email because I wasn't registered here at the time. As it turned out, I waited too long and had to regisiter here to post in the thread anyway.
You only had to ask me if I PM'ed it to you when you said I wasn't on your list and I would have sent it.
Anyway, I gave him my info over the phone when I paid him (while at work BTW, since I'm on night shift and he's only available at night) do I still need to PM it to you?
c3hp0
03-26-2006, 06:46 AM
Can't check my "spam folder" - that stuff gets fragged before it gets to me. Can only check my junk mail folder, and I didn't get anything from you. Without all the information, you assumed I was lazy, yet I did look. I explained earlier, had you taken the time to look, that certain domain names are blocked - i.e. I don't get advised of messages from those locales that are sent my way.
No, you don't have to PM anything to me if Michael has taken your information.
Again, if you don't have the time to read through a post; and I suggest from newest to oldest posts, since here you'd only have to read back to the fourth or fifth page; then it's your loss. It is not my job to spoon feed information to 50 plus people who inquire, although I've done quite a bit of that.
I've already done far more work for this GP than I'll ever see in benefit (i.e. had the GP not gone through), and posts like yours assume I owe something to those that inquire, beyond basic courtesy - I have given more, but that's purely at my discretion and isn't a question of my laziness, which this very successful GP has shown not to be an issue (at least in this case). I've answered hundreds of requests for information about this GP.
Finally, it is your interest that is driving your participation, so it is your responsibility to inform yourself. I'm not going to regurgitate the same thing more than 2 or 3 times. What's the point? For your convenience? You're sounding an awful lot like someone from another board. I'll leave it at that.

Hmm, couldn't have taken the time to add in 4 words "PM it to me."?
That I didn't PM is your fault, not mine, so chill the **** out.
I'm only on 2 other car boards, and neither of them are N body boards so I don't think I know you.
You assumed everyone would take the time to read through everything, register here, post, and PM you. I think that's kind of unreasonable considering how widely this was going.
*You* are trying to put together a group buy, making yourself the point of contact for the whole thing. You negotiated the price deal with FFP, and asked everyone to send thier information to YOU via EMAIL. Don't get pissed at me if you can't be bothered to edit your own damn posts.
I can appreciate the fact that this has demanded a lot of your time, but I never asked to be spoon fed anything. I did what you asked in the first post I came across that had any relevant information.
I never acted like you OWE me a damned thing. I didn't ask you to do set this up, in fact, I didn't ask you for anything other than "Can I get in on this?". In the end, I didn't even need to go through you at all.
Next time if you can't be bothered to do the work involved in setting up a G/B without feeling like everyone expects you to do what you said you would, don't set one up.
I think you need to get some perspective on the whole thing, and just be glad this worked out for everyone as well as it did.
c3hp0
03-27-2006, 12:00 PM
The reason it worked out so well is that:
a) Most everyone took the time to inform themselves and follow instructions
b) We used a single point of contact - this forum
c) I kept track of the various ways I was being contacted and brought that information together
d) FFP was very cooperative.
In no particular order.
You're one of very few who decided not to read through the information (a half dozen or less out of 50 plus who inquired or participated) and then complain that you don't have it correct. I expect that kind of response, since you can't please everyone.
I chill out when I decide to chill out, but I'm by no means pissed - I haven't bolded anything, no caps, no **** words. I am annoyed with these kinds of exhanges, but I knew this type of thing was coming from the outset.
The GP is there for anyone to participate, and if one decides to partake, it's their responsibility to gather information, regardless of where they're coming from, no one else's. That is understood, and followed, by 9 out of 10 who needed information, and nearly all who participated.
Finally, you and the rest of the 10 percent or less who complain about these things clearly miss the idea that if someone has to pay a significant amount of attention to each person who asks and/or participates, this size of group purchase (and most are not in the n-body or w-body communities) wouldn't be completed, due to the time required to add "PM it to me" for many, then respond to the chain of questioning that typically follows from someone who doesn't take the time to gather information themselves. There were a few who participated in this one that did have many multiple questions that were responded to, but only after they gathered the information that you decided was my job to repeatedly present (and that was already presented in multiple posts here).

Chip, P&P, CAI, Beretta GTZ gearing 1990 model, headers, and FFP pulley. Possibly 3500 UIM and the 4.3 TB.

this is from page one. When you buy the UDP you'll need a smaller serp belt as well. I went with the Gatorback Belt, part #: 4060855 and works perfectly
c3hp0
03-31-2006, 11:59 PM
Relevant post here on GAOC about UDP and belts (http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52688)
From the installation instructions at FFP (http://www.fastfwdperformance.com/pdf/pulley%20instructions.pdf):
You will need to purchase a shorter belt (around $25 for a gatorback). Since every chassis (and some years) uses a different belt length (due to engine mount design), the best way to find the correct belt for your application is to first find out what length your stock belt is and subtract one inch.. Any parts store should be able to help you with this. Have them look up the belt number for your application
the last 3 digits of the belt number is the length of the belt. For example, a belt number of 5060715 would have a length of 71.5. Once you know the stock belt length, subtract 1 to get your new belt length. Then have them get you a belt with the correct last 3 digits.
The link to the discussion about belts lists a belt for the 3100, but I'd use the recommendation from FFP's instructions.

i have my belt already, i'm slapping a 3800 alternator pulley on my alt. which allows you to use the stock size belt, and give a tiny little HP gain. oh and w-body's crank pullies are easier to install, no removing mounts for me:bogey:

So you are both using a smaller crank pulley and a larger alt pulley at the same time then? Hmm, I hope you don't have any idle charging issues.

i never let my car idle for long, i usually try to keep moving. and from what i have heard no one has has any problems with the set up. but if i do i can just put the stock alt pulley back on nd buy another belt. the only real reason i'm doing it is because i just bought a new belt not even 2 months ago and i don't want to go out and buy another.

04-03-2006, 01:43 AM
Where do you source the 3800 alt pulley and what is change in the measured output at idle with such a config?
Don't know the relevance of such a tweak/mod to the n-body platform, but check out ZZP's .5 volt increase by diode mod for w-bodies (http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/articles1.php?id=48). No tech articles, as that one is called, are listed for Grand Ams on ZZP's site, so architecture differences may be an issue.
What is also common in the w-body community, and something I've done on my Regal, is to upgrade the wiring that runs to/from the battery/alt/grounds. I haven't looked hard at the Alero, but I imagine some of those wires could be upgraded for slight increases in voltage. I gained about a half volt at idle (13.7 to 14.2) with just the alt to fusebox rewire with 4 ga power wire (actually added a second run of ga on top of factory run) and cleaning up the battery ground (removing paint).

you actually lose volts doing this, however i'm sure with the "big 3" mod(i have already done) the voltage drop will not be much if any over stock, plus there are a few w-body guys running this mod with audio systems and have had no problems. i don't have a system, and i never plan on getting one, also i have no extra stuff to drain power so i figure i should be good.
i just see buying a $5 pulley from a JY was better than a $30 surp belt
i will slap the multi meter to it before and after i do the the pulley swaps, and tell how it goes. from what i have heard the 3800 pulley is about 20% larger over the stock pulley

When I get some time, I'll measure the alt pulley on the Regal and compare to the Alero (don't have calipers, but any method used reliably on both will yield a relatively accurate difference - or, I might just purchase some calipers).

ok, so, what i have gathered from this conversation about the 3800 alt. pulley, is that, with the UD pulley and 3800 pulley, you can still use the stock size 660 belt? or is this incorrect?
Thanks

from what i under stand yes you keep the stock size belt. i have already learned that for i to work i need need one from a newer 3800, best to find a 3800 alternator without the external cooling fins. how ever i'm not sure if n-bodies the alternator is any different from a w-body, or if their is any canges thru the years

2000 Regal alt pulley is ~ 5.7cm diameter, where 02 Alero alt pulley is ~ 4.8cm diameter, measured with inexpensive caliper, with belts on, but after subtracting belt thickness. Circumferences are 17.91 cm and 15.08.
Difference is 16 percent under for the w-body pulley. Belts are both 2cm wide and the mounts appear to be the same.
I'll likely change my belt out anyway (just over 60,000kms or 40,000 miles now), but I'll probably try a w-body pulley with the other upgrades.
Haven't looked for the orange voltage ref wire mentioned in the zzp article for w-bodies, but will do that soon. I imagine it is the same as the w-body, since I'm assuming that the n-bodies also control alt output via the pcm and the alts otherwise look identical.

I haven't received any emails either, but mine is being shipped across the border and by UPS (all Canadian orders), not Fedex (all U.S. orders).
The last info I have from Michael is that he received all the payments and not to worry, which was on March 30.
I say give it 5 to 10 business days from yesterday (the pulleys were to have shipped out on the weekend). Many to most are likely to arrive sooner.

Good to see people receiving product.
As for the diode voltage boost working in n-bodies, I should've looked harder. ZZP sells a packaged solution - essentially a male and female inline connector with one or two diodes in the middle (stage 1 or 2): http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_am/products1.php?id=518
So, I'm curious what people will see with the 3800 alt pulley installed in terms of voltage drop. I'm sure with the ZZP product (16 to 20 bucks) and at least one of the big 3 upgrades, any appreciable voltage drop will be made up, but I don't have a firm grasp on whether the diode mod causes and increase in the alt's mechanical load on the drive system (i.e. the crank pulley) and if so, to what extent.

1. i looked for a long time, and i could only come across a 70.3 gates, or a 69.5 gatorback/dayco, nothing in the middle, so i went with the 69.5 and seems to work just fine. What have other used as far as belt length, brand?
2. i was at u-pull-it on sat. and was unable to locate any larger 3800 alt. pulley, is there any particular make/model, or phase of 3800 engine this pulley is on?

it's on seriesII 3800's. look for 97+ GP's or 98+ monte or regals ect. you need to find an alternator with the the internal cooling fins in the alternator(like our alternators) if the 3800 alt. has exterior fins the pulley won't work.
you could try other GM cars, maybe even other makes, there are not that may different alt. pullies out there.
it's pretty shocking how heavy the alt. pulleys are, i haven't put it on a scale but the 3800 pulley feels a tad lighter than the FFP pulley.

Can you use someone else's CC and pay them back. Or, can you set up your card on PayPal and send the funds to him that way? Lastly, you coul send a money order, but only if he accepts that method. Email him directly for approval of any of the other methods.
Cheque cards are not credit cards, per se, so that's likely why it won't go through.
I'm writing an exam soon, so I'll not be checking here for a few days. GL.

Just to remind everyone with the 3x00, the ring has to be aligned in a certain position to avoid misfiring. It's been posted a few times, but make sure one of the "windows" of the ring is in line with the keyway. Make is as perfectly in line as possible!!! :)

Gates replacement belt is a K060864, sourced through NAPA. You can pick up an alt pulley from any alt rebuilder for $10 - tell them you want a pulley for a 98-2003 GTP.

Just bought couple of pulleys from an alt repair shop (they do other work) for $10 each. They pulled them off of alternators that were sitting around, sandblasted, and painted them.
57mm (2.25 inches) is the size. The alternator is a CS130D (Delco part number).
