Hello. I attempted to instal an amp on my own.. Needless to say, it didn't turn out so great. I have the amp powering two 6x9s. It's a twochannel 100rms i believe. Well, anyhow.. I can barely hear anything out of the speakers it is hooked up to. If i fade to them and turn them up, all i get is distorted bass, nothing else... What could I have done wrong?

The following things raise question for me:

1.) My HU had no rca cables, so I converted the speaker wires in the trunk to RCA w/ an adapter from Best Buy.

2.) I haven't mounted the amp yet.

3.) The speaker wire I used seemed awfully large.. I think it was like 14 gague or something.

Could any of these things be the problem?

is the amp powered?

Yea. 8gague from the battery. Negative causes spark and all that. So I think it is. Is there any other way to tell if it is getting power?

make sure the negative is grounded well. There should be a color, prolly not red, light up when it should be played. Is your remote wire in well?

if you're getting sound then all your connections are good. it sounds to me like you have the low pass filter on (LPF). turn it to full pass to get all the sounds in the spectrum, or high pass (HPF) to get a majority of the mids/highs and no lows

Ahhh man... That was definitely it. Jeez. Thanks. Well hey, I'm stilll learning! Thanks again.

Well, I have another question too.. How do I make it so that all my mid-highs and highs come from the front speakers ? I have some bass blockers on the front, but.. I was told it is harder to block high frequencies. I don't want it to sound like the music is coming from behind me.

Thanks again guys. I appreciate the help; I really do.

Edit: Also, I'm getting some static noise. Could it possibly be because instead of running RCA cables from the head unit I just converted the rear speaker wires into RCA from the trunk?

I ran my power cable and remote on one side and didn't run speaker wire at all since it was all accessible from the trunk.

not really clear what you're asking... you dont want any sound to be coming from behind? or you just want low's coming from behind? or you dont want any bass coming through the front?

static noise...hmm. check all your connections to make sure they're in the right spot, they're not touching anywhere, and they're nice and tight. i had a problem like that, but the rca's coming out of my HU had a bad connection on them, so when ever the car hit a bump it would cause it to make static. you're not running rca's though.

Oh.. I found out what the noise was, it was the RCA adapter. It had to be adjusted.

What I meant before was that I want the higher frequencies coming from my front speakers, and the lower ones coming from the back. This way it won't feel like I have my back to the music so much. I was thinking about putting bass blockers on the front speakrs and somehow blocking higher frequencies from the rear ones. Turn trebel up and see how that sounded. I was told if I wire the bass blockers backwards that they would gaurd from higher frequencies.. but I don't know if that's true or not. I also heard about FMODS, a passive crossover that plugs right into your amp. I don't know where to find those locally though. Hmm...

Thanks again for all of your replies guys. I appreciate them.

there are a couple of things you can do. 1) get an amp for the front speakers so it evens everything out. 2) get a good deck that have cross over settings in it. 3) get cross overs for your speakers.
if you block the "bass" from the front speakers you will loose your midrange in front and just have it in the back. that probably won't sound very good. You could make your own low pass filter to filter out your highs in the back, but isn't that kind of defeating the purpose of the speakers? Honestly your best bet is to hold out till you can afford another amp and amp the front speakers. You made the same mistake i made. I also got my back speakers and amp first, so all my sound was comming from the back. what you and I should of done was get the front components first and amp them. Then upgrade the back. but hey live and learn.
