View Full Version : Random Rattling noise

I have a very loud rattle noise that comes from my engine compartment sometimes but not all the times. I researched and found that most people dont know what it is. I found out today that it stops if i turn the AC on. Anyone know?

Blower motor? Does the noise speed up when you increase the fan speed?

My moms makes that wierd rattly noise only in gear from the Passenger side pully area, but ONLY in gear, wierd...

The noise is a really loud metal rattle noise and happens a couple seconds after i start my car. It gets really high pitched but as soon as i turn the AC on it shuts off.

Would start by checking hoses under the car vibrating against body frame sounds like its your case,the ac compressor put somewhat pressure on the lines stopping the noise,it should be the other way ,that when you have the ac on it makes the noise but,what the heck,go and visual check those ac line hoses and metal lines

What would cause the hoses to vibrate against my car that harshly? Do I just need to have the hose replaced if this is the case or can i do something without replacing it?

Hi,
I'm an AC mechanic. It's probably a bad AC compressor clutch. The clutch spins free on a bearing when the AC is NOT on and locks up to the compressor when on. You should be able to see visual damage or at least rusty crud on the outside face of the clutch. You may have to look at it from underneath. Good luck

Remove the serpentine belt and wiggle all pullys. Also spin them. It could be a bearing or the Idler pulley. Dumb question but is your power steering fluid up to level. I know these pumps leak and get fluid all over the serpentine belt. It could be slipping which will creat a knocking sound.

FIRST OF ALL,before you go wandering,do yourself a favor and go inspect your car,once you feel the vibration,by your god given sense of feeling in your hand,and your ears you will see or hear the possible course and then try to correct deal
