im not sure if this has been answered or asked in the forums and im sure its a dumb question but i just found out my friend has a chevy lumina and i was wondering if like i took the engine out of that and just swapped it, it would work or would i have to buy all new parts for it to work properly in the 94GA. i was also wondering if my tranny would work or would i have to buy a whole new tranny. i have a manual transmittion and id like to keep its so and i was wondering if ne one has any experiance with this sorta swap. thanx for ur help and srry if i didnt research the forums enought to find my own answer.

The transmission in your car now will only bolt up to a Quad 4 or Twin Cam, the bellhousing patern is specific to those engines only.

if you can do the swap then do it. get your friend to get an ls1 or an lt1 for his lumina. but i don't really know why one would want to do the swap.. they are pretty much the same engine aren't they?

the 3.1 in the lumina won't mount directly to your engine bay. you'd have to fabricate mounts or transfer them from another car. i think i remember hearing that you could use a quad tranny with a 3100(?) but you had to swap bellhousings or something. moot IMO since the Q4 tranny would rev too high for most any V6 - you don't want to be shifting a 3x00 or 2.8/3.1l mpfi engine to 7000rpm unless you've done some internal work, and even then it's probably not going to match the torque curve very well.

since it's going to require fab work to get a different engine in your car, i'd look at either another quad ( you can get them in crates stil i think? anyway it would be bolt-in no problem ) or an ecotec or some other 4cyl that would be a better match to your tranny, if you are willing to go to the trouble of engine management and motor mounts.

if you swapped in a 3100 or something you'd need a different trans. and some kind of engine management ( standalone, reflash, DHP etc ). your ECM would freak out when you connected it to a V6. "wtf am i supposed to do about these extra cylinders??" it would think. "how much fuel am i supposed to put in here?"
