Here is ours.

Its a older photo, the arrowhead is now purple with a purple fire extinguisher on one side and a purple mag lite on the other side.

They are 10" Kenwoord Tonado subs powered by a Orion amp. The back of the box has the same angle as the rear seats and sits flush with the seats. Amp is mounted back there with spacers, no over heating problems, been going fine like this for years now. The strut bar has only about 1/4" clearence from the top of the box.

Both amps are mounted inside that 'chamber', and the fans are used to exhaust the hot air. They're controlled by a relay and switch on when the amps are on. Hard to believe, but they make a big difference. :)

airbornflght

yeh, i thought about building a amp rack and doing some led fans on it, except if i do it, the fan circuit will be thermally controled and have a manual override. (can you tell im an electronix junkie?)

tommymcc
03-17-2006, 05:18 AM
why are they being concealed in the first place? theres no better cooling than just mounting them vertically with about a foot of open space around them, no need to vent them, unless you hide them to prevent them from being stolen, then of course they need some ventilation

I was going for simplicity and practicality. In my '99, I had the amps mounted to the rear seat. But with plans to put crap in the trunk, I didn't want to have the wires exposed like that again. I thought of doing up an elaborate amp rack with the amps exposed and the wires hidden, but time and practicallity became an issue again. Quite simply the amps aren't the prettiest to look at, I was going for function over form. So by hiding them completely I don't have to worry about them getting scratched up with strollers or melting grocery bags, etc.

I have gotten many compliments about the install, and I'm pleased with it for now. Maybe when Evan gets a little older and I can actually listen to my music I'll do something a little more elaborate. But for now this will do. :)

Thermal controls crossed my mind too, but I decided against it. Having the fans run all the time prevents the heat from building up in the first place, and was pretty simple to install. :) Just two 3" 12V computer case fans wired in parallel with in-line fuses to a relay that's controlled by the remote turn-on lead. Power is supplied by the power wire running from the batt for the amps.

tommymcc
03-17-2006, 09:52 AM
ah, in my ga i just ran the wires under the carpet on the rear seat, you need to reapply some adhesive to make the carpet stick to the seat again though, i'm referring to the carpet on the back of seat, or you could do it like dave did and mount them on the sids

sunrunner_pei
03-17-2006, 09:54 AM
I also didn't want to damage any of the factory trim, cloth, etc. The Grand Am is a lease, I wanted to be able to go back to 100% stock with NO evedence of anything ever being in there. :) Mounting to the seat backs would leave some holes in the carpet.

:agree: if you go back to my pics you will see my amps are mounted on 'stand-offs' this way air can circulate around the entire amp.

but the stealth look like shawn has is kinda cool :)

Thanks for the comments, I just got it finished about a week ago. I got to get it metered now, I have the same sub as before, but the box is 1 cubic foot larger and I am running twice as much power to it, 800w RMS. I was only running 400w before and I hit 133db, It feels about twice as loud so I guessing mid 140's

not exactly sure. fuse didnt do it's job and it just popped. i was pushing it pretty hard, and then the sub stopped. i thought the amp just got hot and shut off.......if hardly ever happened, but it happened a couple times. but then i smelt something, looked back and the amp was smoking

The Amps have fans built in.

The sub box is seperate from the amp area.

It sounds better with the seats down, only because then the sound has a way of getting into the passenger area better. The sub does'nt really see any difference if its mounted the way I have it then if it where mounted the traditional way. I get this question alot, I had the sub mounted that way on my old box also. The only difference is that the "punch" of sound goes into the box, instead of out, but you get basically the same result.

And if anyone thinks (or knows) my reasoning is wrong please let me know and explain.

This is my new one. The trunk is a bit of a mess because I have yet to clean up the wires, and my previous amp blew, so I had to throw an old 2 channel MTX in the trunk. 12 inch Type S in slot ported box getting ~100watts:(

like i said, i loved those home audio speakers...E315's. they weren't the top of the line, but they hummed pretty good. there was actually one time when i rattled a glass out of the cabinet. i dont remember how much power i had on them, but it was sufficient :P

im going to be in the market for a new better home audio system soon and the vega's are gonna be pretty high on the list

1999grandamse
04-10-2006, 09:07 AM
I always had issues finding out how much power to give those Cerwin Vegas because I couldn't find any manuals or anything for these older subs.
Since they looked kinda cheap next to my Type S, I never gave either one more than ~50 watts.

Does anyone know how much power (RMS, duh) the ones I posted handle?

The number "245watts" is on the magnet, but it doesn't say if that is peak or RMS. If it's RMS, you guys will see those subs return to my GA within a month.

i've never had any dealings with their car audio. i've seen it used, but i've never personally used it. 245 seems kinda low for them, but i guess im just comparing them to their home audio stuff. if you had them at 50 and they thumped pretty good then it was obviously enough to move them

I'm guessing those weren't Vega series Cerwin Vegas then? A Vega 12" should handle 500W RMS no problem, IIRC. 500W RMS was the rating but they could handle more. But if yours said 245W then I'm guessing they couldn't be Vegas, but some other Series.

If it said 245W on them, that means the very least you could give them would be ~125W but knowing CW that very well could have been the RMS rating of the sub.

10,000? is that the 18? or have they upgraded their voice coils? used to the 10/12 would take 2500 RMS and 5000 peak.

i would say you got it cheap then. is it stolen? if i could have gotten one that cheap i'd have one right now........or i would have bought one. i might have destroyed it by now :P

lol...I dont think they even make em that big for the eco. You may have to get a custom jober....or go with duals.

Check j-body.org audio section. 1 or 2 people are in the process of dual alt. set-ups. They may be able to guide you in the process...or atlest help you find the biggest alt. for you car.

well more power to you and all, but honestly why would you want a system in a daily driver that you can't really use? yes you can turn it on low volumes, but you can't really crank it up if you're running that much power when it's not rated for it. you could unhook the amp when you're not at a competition, but that would get old.

and yeah, $800 is rediculous

I just blew out a tire the other day. Called AAA got a tow truck and had it towed to a tire place about 30 miles away, all for free.

AAA is only like $75 a year and they will tow upto 100 miles for free, bring you gas, unlock your car, get discounts on hotels etc. I had my car towed 96 miles when I blew up the tranny. Well worth the cost.

I went through 5 different designs before I came up with that one. My first car that I competed with in the late 80's and early 90's had 8 15's in it. No spare at all on the car. After the first time I had a flat, I vowed never to do something like that again. Have to admit, I sometimes miss the 15's though.

nice solo x. great stuff. what kind of amp/wattage you got pushing that beast?

at the momment im running a ma audio 802sx 4400 watts high current compition amp

couple of things - I've been an SPL guy for a number of years, and have YET to see a 50 out of anything with a trunk and that small a box. Got video of the run?

Second, the MA amp is nice (I sell the entire anaba line) but it don't make anywhere near 4400wrms. Just like the V4000XD (Visonik digital monoblock) thats "rated" at 4400 wrms. They actually make about 2800 wrms and consume a buttload of current doing it.....

Not trying to stir the pot - but there's just NO WAY that Solo in that small a box with that small a port with that amp is a 150+ on the TL...... as a comparison, I've built a CRX (loudest street chassis out there) with a PAIR of RE 06XXX12's running a Visonik 4000XD. He also had 3 batteries, a 240amp alternator, and multiple runs of 1/0. He can't break a 148 on the TL.... that includes full CRX box design, external Aeroports, etc...see what I mean?

for those not familiar:

The 06XXX12 is a 13" tall, 87 lb monster that offers almost 5" of linear, one-way excursion. Thats a pic of the new XXX beside an old one.
