I am starting to look for a rough running car that I can tinker with this summer and not only learn from but restore. What would a good car be for this? I haven't really been around an engine bay much but I figure a little trial and error and books ought to set me straight. My ideal car right now would be semi local, running, and in about the $1000 range, also perferably a muscle car. Does anyone know of a good beginner project car? Thanks

As someone with similar interests (restoring), I can say your going to have a very hard time finding a decent musclecar to "tinnker with", for under $1000. Most of what you'll find in that range pre-'74 will be rustbuckets and money-pit cars. Your best-bet will be eBay, since most cars listed in classifieds and magazines will be far over $1500.
As of right now, my friends and I are looking at a '73 Mercedes E-series. Its really the only decent car we could find for under 1200.

a Thirdgen is one of the best bets for something to tinker with, you can pick up a clean, rust free, running car(rough paint and body) for around $1k. parts are cheap, and you could go one of 10 billion different ways with it.

yea I was thinking of an early 70's firebird or of course the classic camero A rough body and paint I'm assume will come with the cost but I'd love to stay away from the rust.

You won't find any 70.5-75 Fbodies for around $1000 unless they are total piles. 70.5-73 are the most desired 2nd generation Fbodies. If anything you could find a '79-'81 FBody for about $1000. But I'm with Cory, 3rd Generations are great buys right now.
