How can I get both off of my '96? I top out at 105 now which is ridiculous cuz I know I'm capable of hitting 120 easily.

Use the "Search" button, and you cant do it without getting an aftermarket computer. Also, its 107 that your car "technically" tops out at.

The govenor is on there for a reason. but yeah, do a search...

before you do that you need to make sure you have good brakes and shocks and struts and all that. just because you know your car can hit 120 doesn't mean it's safe to do it with that you have on the car now.
my 96 tops out at 105.. maybe 107. the speedo goes to 115.
the governor is indeed on there for a reason but most other cars go higher then the gm cars do. i don't know what gm got on their minds when they released almost all of their cars with a 115pmh speedo... and a governor lower than that.
maybe because there are too many retards who can't drive on the roads today.. but what i say to that... is natural selection lol. :D

I'm going to give a small perspective from the canadian side.
107mph is 172km/h and GA's made for canada/anywhere in the world, has a 160km/h speedo. I guess GM picked to set the max speed based on km/h and not mph since only america is the only place in the world that uses mph.
Anyone remember a few years when a spaceprobe wouldn't fly because the supplier of some screws used standard and the design was in metric.

the mars global surveyor probe that burned up in mars' atmosphere a few years ago went down because the contractor used ft-lbs for the attitude rockets' thrust but NASA did calculations in newton-meters. or vice versa. only lost a few hundred million dollars due to unit conversion. =(
it sure would be easier if the US could just be consistent with the rest of the world!
my beretta has english bolts in the driveline and metric all over the body - wtf? i think it's a craftsman conspiracy aimed at selling more sockets and wrenches, personally.
oh yeah - the topic - as far as the governer goes, forget it. whatever you're thinking of doing it's illegal. your car traps in the 1/4 well below your governer anyway. or get DHP and go make a nuisance of yourself on the highway. either way check your tires.

My 'Canadian' Grand Am has a 180 km/h speedo... and it'll do 190 'till the governor kicks in (thats 118mph); I've done it many times. Maybee I have a lemon .

Yeah that's a strange thing, though it's been reported in various instances that the limiter engages at an incorrect speed. It's been explained before that one of the cause of this could be simply instrument error meaning the VSS AC signal to the PCM is actually 108mph but for some reason the IPC displays the same signal data as a higher speed in error.
My GA also has a "180 km/h" speedo as well--all 96-98 cars with the Z49 [Metric] cluster should have the same. It actually goes a bit higher--I think 185km/h as there is one more tick after the 180 I thought, but the last number written is 180.
And yes I'd agree as have most other people, that doing even the govenernor speed in your Grand Am on a public road is not exactly a smart or responsible thing to do. Getting a reprogrammed PCM and removing that limit only to engage in even more foolery is not recommended.
It actually makes me glad there is no "governor" that can be easily or cheaply removed as everyone that starts a thread like this thinks :roll2: And we all know there's another one started every week or so :roll2:

Hmm 180km i wonder where I got 160 from. Must be old age setting in on me at the ripe old age of 19.
alright, im not dumb but what the hell is a govenor ? Is that like something that wont let the car go over x amount of speed, or does it just simply start slowing the car down?

The rev limiter is set according to what tires come on the car, so if your car had upgraded wheels it had upgraded v rated tires.

A rev limiter is different then a govener.
A rev limiter will cut off fuel past red line so you don't destroy the engine.
A govener will cut off fuel past a certain speed (like Marshall said, a speed that is lower than the rating of stock tires) so you don't kill yourself by blowing out a tire at 140mph.
My 95 GT hit 110(mph) before I slowed down, I was only at 4500 RPMs, now maybe my speedo is off, or-- I know my Tach is messed up, but I know I had room to go. My speedo goes up to 120MPH. Now, My govener might be removed due to the fact that I have a replacement engine, but I think the rev limiter is still active.
Here's a question..
My 95 GT has a 3100 V6 and an Automatic transmission...
when I rev the engine, it hits 4000 RPMs and moves back and fourth between 3500-4100 RPMs like it's the redline. What's that about?
any help would be good.
I also was thinking of making a Cold air Intake with some ABS plastic. Tell me what you think.

your rev limiter

it does that when, like when you are starting out, or when you are in the final gear trying to max the speed?

or when you put it in park/neutral? revving the engine in park isn't very good for the motor - so there's a limitter put on the RPMS in neutral gears. it's burned into the ECM.
replacing the engine has nothing to do with the governer. it's controlled by the ECM via a signal from the transmission IIRC. i believe there's a transmission wire you can unplug and get rid or the speedo, 1st and 4th gear, and the governer all at the same time. not exactly usefull.. this would be on the 4t60 but am sure there's something similar in any GA auto tranny.
It does that when I'm not moving. In neutral, when I'm rolling, It won't do that. But when I'm stopped, It'll do that in Park and Neutral.
