Powered by motors like the 400cid or 455cid you could consider them 'Muscle' cars I suppose. But it's styled to compete with the then current European sedans that where making their way into people's driveways. Pontiac's most popular 'Muscle Cars' would be more like the GTO, and LeMans, some may even sa the Tempest. :)

Well, heres the deal, they were on the SAME platform as the Grand Prix of the same time, the interriors were pretty much the same, as John said, they had the 400 and the 455, same tranny too (Turbo400? don't hold me to it)
obviously the GP is the higer car, it's standerd features were most of the optional on the GA, the GA came stock with the 2bbl but the 4bbl was optional, the GP only came with the 4bbl, and also the engine is more sports tuned in the GP.
AFA the GA being a muscle car.... I would say for the time frame, stock, no. it was a familey car, but a real, a mans familey car. the GP wasn't evena muscle car but more of a sport coupe type of car (has tuned radial suspension, every car has it today but back then it was a big deal)
I read somewhere that Pontiac made the "Grand Am" as a bridge between the Trans Am, which was the sports car and the Grand Prix which was more luxury, and actually it is true (more for the 70's then today) becuase the GP was indded more of a luxery car then the GA, but the GA could *very easily* be modded to be one hell of a car (remember, my father has the '74 GP, that and the 2 older GA's are the same exat platform and car basically)
the GTO was stopped in '72 (correct? give or take a year) the LeMans was then made into a crappy car, in which it kept goin into almost the early 90's getting yet more crappy.... the Tempest was just the basic of the basic, it had the stright-6 OHC, which was slow. in '64 when the GTO first came out, it was just a extra trim level on the Tempest, that is why the '64 GTO is actually the Tempest GTO, it wasn't until '65 when the GTO became it's own car, let alone many improvements.
AFA their condition, the inside of the yellow-ish one is trashed and was I think a parts car, there is front-end damage on the red one, to what extent, who knows, the bodies are rusted, probally rotted in a few spots, who knows what the undercarrige is like, I think both trannys are ok, and I don't remember the condition of the engines.
There are soo many cars there though, and the Villa is for sale, so we are going to have to do something with all these.... some neat ones off the top of my head are the '57 Super Chief (would be real nice restored as it is complete and solid) the '46 Willys CJ2A (people version of the WW2 Jeep) is completly rotted (frame, body is pretty much gone) engine is seazed and drivetrain is all rusted together (although tranny and transfer case move freely) I think the Fire Bird is a '78 but don't hold me to it, there is a Pontiac Astro (Vega) a parts GP for my fathers, a completly junked '65 (I think) tempest, mid -60's Pontiac station wagon, '67 LeMans (actually inside, needs new front end and conv. top which my father has and to be restored) '47 Ford dump truck, a '71 Caddy limo with the 472 (mmmmmm Caddy) and a '79 Lincon limo, but the Caddy is wayyyyyy better. my fathers '68 GTO rag top (his high school car) is the only car in restored condtion, he wants to get the engine rebuilt this year and then put the new conv. top on and that is ready to go crusing. the '66 Reo oil truck (huge) is just cool becuase it is a big old truck, and really cool to drive around. The '69 International pick-up (with utility box) is also restored and used as the plow truck/anytime we need the pickup (23k miles since the restore in the early 90's)
There is more, that is just what I remember, sorry for going on though, once I start typing, I can't stop :D

Rick, I just want to comment on the GTO. AS you said the Tempest carried the GTO nameplate, but in '65 the base model for the GTO was the LeMans.

ok, I just got the years mixed up, so '65 the GTO was still a Tempest, and '66 was when the GTO became it's own car?

The GTO Story...
Well back in the day John Delorean, Bill Collins and Russell Gee were at the GM proving ground with a '64 Tempest Prototype up on a lift. While checking out under the hood of the Tempes Collins said "Wow, that 326 looks just like a 389!", Gee confermed that both block castings were identical Delorean said "Well, we'll drop one in." Using a Catalina engine the swapped it into the LeMans and had it drivealbe within the week. No part change notices where writen up or anything. The car was covered and Delorean stated that no one was too see or drive that car. One major problem with this project was that GM had a corporate restriction that the engine displacement in an A-body to 330 cid. Although until 1964, the 326 is actually 336cid but Pontiac called it a 326 to make the 330 cid edict. After some late night brainstorming sessions with several engineers and Jim Wagners, and marketing pros, with the blessing of Pontiac's general manager they decided to offer the GTO as an option package on the Tempest without seeking permission from the GM corporate offices! Originally, the GTO was to be a limited production item, meant to jumpstart sales of the previously poor selling Tempest line but ended up being very popular.

Basically a LeMans is a trim package for the Tempest. The Tempest was pretty much as basic as they came. Althought your correct the GTO became it's own model in '66 it still had a base model of the LeMans, so I never understood how it became it's own model. Yes the platform is still a A-body, plus the sheet metal and all is pretty interchangable. I just could never understand that. '73 is the last year the GTO was based on the LeMans, '74 it was a crappy sticker package on the Ventura which ended up being the death of the GTO. Rumor has it that the GTO nameplate almost made it to the Grand Am, but like pushing TEmpest sales they wanted to boost Ventura sales and it failed as '74 was the last year of the GTO. Well that is until 2004. :)
