well looks like you lost a rod there, the cap, or part of it is missing, probbably on the ground somewhere. that light tapping that turned bad was probably your crank slapping away at the rod cap untill it shot it through the pan. THis is deffinatly not good. sorry to see your troubles.

All I found on the ground were three pieces of the pan and a wooden knob that looked like it came off the end of the dipstick. Some other stuff could have fallen out of the pan in the course of the tow, though. I'll have to take a pic of the pieces I found next time I stop by there.

Wood, Last i knew there were no wooden pieces in our engines. your rod cap has to be somewhere, look for it. was that the original internals in the car, and if so was the engine worked on recently, i find it odd for a quad to bust a rod bolt like that. can you get a picture of that piece of wood, im thinking its a beat up rod bolt nut, that looks like wood. but hey what do i know i havent seen it.

A part of the dipstick is wood.

I posted about it Monday when we were only a month down in posts. It started with a little ticking which got noisier and noisier on the way home. Stopped at a rest stop for a while and went BOOM and dropped the three pan pieces when I started out down the ramp... I'm toying with buying a new W41 from Manta to drop in. Waiting to hear from them on some issues...

Paint-dude: Original internals, yes and no engine work has ever been done on it. Got the chip in Jan. had the water pump and exhaust done a year ago and got an oil change about 2,000 miles back. As Fbod mentioned, there is a little wooden knob on the end of the oil stick. I'll have another look and take a pic of the parts I recovered at the scene.

It's just a little black knob on the end of the dipstick.

Pieces parts. I wanted to confirm the little black knob was from the dipstick, but no luck. My dipstick is forever pulling out of the lid which it did today, and I was unable to get the dipstick out, which is strange, leading me to belive it may be bent up or torn up or something. Next time I go back I'll bring the needle nose pilers so I can pull it out. Also it's pretty clear more of the pan is missing than what I picked up so maybe some of it shot off the road and I just didn't see it. I may have to make a trip down there to see if anything else is laying about.

They dont all have them. pretty much if your engine doesnt have the axial mount pads.. you wont have a wood peaice on the dip stick... just like some 'sticks are somewhat threaded at the top and others are the old fashoined push and half turn. not sure what year it was changed, but my D/S is from a 92 and its got the goofy knob that my 90 didnt.

AXIAL MOUNT PADS????????? what is this and how does it effect the dipstick having a wooden knob?

the mount pad in the timing chain area It lets you know the engine was built after 92

I forgot to mention that last weekend when I went to yank the HU and remove all the airbox and related bellows crap I had brought along the needle nose and tried to pull the dipstick up. As suspected it must have got torn up when all hell cut loose. I was unable to pull it up at all. I had just checked the oil again before I pulled out of the parking spot and the stick was fine at that point.

I'm sorry, I probably should cut my losses, but I don't think I can. I'm so close to just ordering the W41 with the clutch and flywheel. My entire suspension has been rebuilt and the car seems pretty free of rust, though I do see a little under the trunk lid. Am I nuts? New block, new injectors, new head, valves, good (although not the best) cams, I can get cores on the exh. manifold since I'll stick with the ported one, and the throttle body and flywheel. Generally against my instincts to put this much in to a car worth as little as it is, but I don't really like the newer styles as well. I have Quad fever damn it and there is just simply no quitting... Uggg....

Well the old motor is out and a cam had to be removed to swap the PS to the new W41.

Were you ever able to determine what caused it to fail in the 1st. place? I read this thread late, but from what you were saying, I take it that it just blew up without any kind of warning.
Man, ya gotta quit using that plastic explosive for that extra boost!!

Eventually I'll get the block back and tear it down. But I was getting a ticking noise and the engine got louder and louder on the way home. Should have probably quit with it earlier and had my wife come pick me up a little further from home, but it was probably shot even before I eventually pushed it over the edge. I have my suspicions about the root cause, but until I can get into it I really can't be sure about my theory...
