Anyone here know where you can buy custom gauges for a 1992 grand am se? I am looking for one that can be customized with the face and light colors, like the HVAC covers you can get on this website, if possible.. I am looking for either a silver face or a blue face, with red lettering or similar.. anyone know where?

Anyone know how hard it is to get a tachometer gauge to replace one without a tachometer ? My car is a manual and it has a shift light on it, so I am figuring it shouldn't be too hard to get a working tachometer on it, as doesn't the shift light have to use an rpm sensor to signal ?

holy hell, you are right.. that is rather pricey.. almost 100 dollars for it.. hmm, might get it once I get some money saved up. What do you guys think about a silver face with blue lights/lettering? I am going with a blue car and silver accents, so I want the hvac, light control, and gauges to be silver with blue lights on them...

Under $100 is a bargain... especially since it's made-to-order, the costs of tooling to produce them and how they probably sold only a handful.

It's a direct swap, but you need the Quad 4 tach cluster. The V6 one's tach would be way off. (it's marked 4 or 6 cyl in the lower right corner) You'll need to replace the oil pressure switch with an oil pressure sensor if you want the oil gauge to work properly too.

Both clusters have the shift light. The shift light on both types is fed directly off the PCM and actually it's based on MAP pressure and max RPM before rev limiter.

So than i'd have to go to a junk yard to get the quad4 tachometer instrument cluster, and than get the gauge made for the tachometer. Anyone know if they are expensive at a junkyard? I can't see spending 200 dollars just to have a cool looking rpm gauge.

If it's too expensive, does speedhut let you order one WITHOUT a tachometer ?

If you want one without tach, go to

www.procarparts.com

hmm, anyone here know if it's illegal to set your odometer of a NEW instrument cluster to match the same value as your old one? (For example, if MY cluster has 147,000 miles, and I buy one that's got 200,000, is it illegal to set the new one back to 147,000, or the new one ahead to 147,000 ? If I get one that's not right and I can't set it back or forward, it's going to throw my maintenance all through a loop

Nope... They need x number of people to purchase before they will spend the money to make the tooling for it. Only 2 people wanted it...

There's also the HVAC & fog overlay kit that never made it:

It can't be changed. It's tamper resistant.

so in otherwords its pointless for me to even think about swapping out an instrument cluster. All the ones near me are salvage parts with over 200k miles on it. I can't take the chance of throwing my maintenance schedule out of wack.. damnit all pontiac

looks like i have to get the not so appealing gauges without the tachometer :(

Does procarparts.com let you customize? It looks like the only one they've got available is white face with blue font.

I talk to to a car place, and they said that if I were to swap out the gauges, the odometer would automatically adjust itself because of a sensor that leads to the odometer? Apparentely when you hook it up and turn the car on, the odometer moves to where it was last set at through the sensor? Anybody heard any word on this?

There's gotta be some way to do it. If you were to buy a new instrument cluster from a dealer, they wouldn't sell you one with 0 miles on it would they? There has to be some way for the new cluster to read accurate mileage information.

Just something that I figured I would share with you guys.. If you have heard any word on this, it would be very helpful.

Nope. It's a mechanical odometer. Only newer cars with digital LED/LCD odometers can retrieve mileage from the PCM. Our PCM's have no clue what the mileage is.

The only chance you have is getting a "replacement" from a dealer made to your current mileage... but:
1. it will be very very expensive
2. they might be reluctant to replace your current gauge cluster since this is a modification, not a replacement

The anti-tampering setup will prevent most from changing it... any attempts to change it will make greg bars appear between the digits indicating it has been tampered with.

If having the wrong mileage on the odometer bothers you, don't change the cluster.

hmm, I decided. I am going to buy the one without the tachometer from procarparts.com... Has anybody dealt with them yet? Can you customize the custom gauges, or are they specifically as shown? (It appears they are white faces with blue font, which is fine but i'd rather silver face to match the rest of my interior)

I tried emailing them but I had to guess on the email address since I couldn't find any contact information.

Grr, it figures. Get a car so I can actually make one look nice, and I can't even do what I want to it.. just my luck.

There's not much aftermarket for pre-99 Grand Ams in general. Be thankful for what we do have... when I purchased my 95, none of this stuff was available.

Speedhut rules! I wish more people would pre-order the HVAC gauges. :(
