View Full Version : Plastic under-bumper peice removal

I just have a few quick questions.

First, that gay black plastic peice that sits underneath the bumper and hangs down...is it necessary? Is there a way to remove it? I have hit curbs with it on more than one occasion.

Also, is it possible to put that SC/T chin peice on an SE. And does anyone have a pic of what it looks like?

And, lastly, I am going to paint some of the interior trim. So far I know I am going to do the dorr handle inserts, vent rings, and trim around the shifter. Where else do you think I should paint for it to look nice?

Thanks everyone.

Dont paint it all at once... start off with the shifter trim and see if you even like it. Make sure you prep it good or i'll be crap later... incase you didnt know. :) I've never seen that SC/T front spoiler on an SE.... Donno if it could be done or not. and you can remove it, just jack up the car and look for some bolts... the sides I dont think you can remove, Since its part of the black covering on the bottom or whatever. I've hit curbs with it too, but meh, its only plastic, I wouldnt worry about it.

2) It's called an air damn. It's there to reduce the amount of air going under your car. At high speeds you may feel more lift without it. It's just plastic and flexible at that...if you hit a couple curbs with it, who cares? I'd leave it if I were you :)

3) Not sure about the chin...but I think it may look odd on an SE.

The plastic piece under the bumper (air dam) is part of the radiator support assembly. You can brake/cut off the dam but you do need the support. Hit that curb hard enough and you won't have to worry about cutting it off. I know this from experience. lol. But, the air dam does help airflow to cool the rad.

The chin spoiler is NOT a direct bolt on. The bumper of the SE and the GT are slightly different. I still think I can make it work with some fiberglass but every time I try to buy one the deal falls thru or something.

No comment on painting interior pieces.

Arn't the GT bumpers a bit lower to the ground than SE bumpers? So it would look totally odd with the chin. But I could be wrong. I have my interior all apart, i'm thinking of painting it, but meh, Its not worth it, I'd rather keep is stock :)

I think I recall reading somehwere that someone fitting the chin spoiler to an se, it should work. The only thing you have to worry about is if you think it looks good or not.

Thats why I am trying to find someone who has done it before.

yea i would stay away from the taking off the air dam. It may cause the engine to over heat. I bought white vinyl paint from the local paint store. i painted the door handle inserts, vent rings, shifter trim and i masked off thr inner part of the radio bezel, i think it looks awesome. im also going to do the trim around the speedo. Oh yea prep it really good.

The way I did is first to start collecting pictures of interiors. I saved mine in a file - even the stuff I didn't like.

I then went looking all through the pictures, settled on what colors (two tone) and how much.

For me, I didn't like too much of a bright color. It's your choice, pick your color(s) and places after you have thought about it.

Many people paint the speedo and radio trim pieces.

^:agree: x2 look around and see what looks good before you start to paint anything. There are a TON of photos on here alone that can serve as good examples of how something would look.

When I started painting my interior I used silver, and found it to be way too bright for me, so I went back and changed my color scheme to a nice darker blue (royal blue), and I also did some pieces in black so that I didnt have too much of one color in there.

Very nice paul =) I wonder if painting my interior red would accent it nice or not.. Decisions Decisions :p I'll look at pictures first :)

I debated on red, but felt it would still be too bright for my tastes, so I didnt do it.

GT has always been closer to the ground for some reason.. and I feel the SCT's are about the same spot or even lower.

Yeah but, if you put an SC/T chin spoiler on there, it'd probably be as low as the GT bumper, and look weird, would it not? Meh. We need pictures! lol

wouldn't it kinda sit on an angle.. and not really straight out? since the SE bumber is rounded near the bottom.

once i lower my car i plan on cutting off that lack piece under the car because that thing seems to touch anything when i go into driveways and over speed bumps...its annoying a nd i actually will probably cut it off later today.

as for painting the interior its not that hard...just clean it well and i would get the duplicolor interior paint...or if u dont wanna go that route just get the overlay trim kits and use those instead...good luck.

I wouldn't "cut" it off if I were you. That's your lower AIR dam and it's supposed to be there.. even if you scrape it on the ground. My 95' didn't have one but I wished that it did. Anyway that just my 2 cents on the idea.

Yeah, Its only plastic.. you dont even see it all that much. I looked at mine and i can see its been scraped quite abit... just stop going so fast when pulling into parking lots, etc and you wont smash it on the pavement.
