Well, I bought this alarm Viper 791..

And I swear to god, mentioning the name "Viper" to any of the local custom shops is like saying I have leprecy

No one will touch this thing..

All I've heard is that they're pieces of crap.. What's the deal? How come no one will install this?

Crap. no. One of the top brands in auto security. I'd take DEI equipment over anything out there.

Why will no one install it? possibly because you didn't buy it from the shop your asking to install it. Thats a policy of many shops...at least when it comes to rem ote start/ security.

Yeah, exactly...

As others have mentioned, DEI makes very good security products and their lineup is among the top name brands in vehicle security.

I guess you mean that you bought the alarm yourself (off eBay or some such) and now you need an installer? Usually if you do that you'll want to do the install yourself, but if you don't think you're up to it check out DEIs site (www.directed.com). I'm sure they have a dealer/installer search by zipcode you can use to find a DEI cert. installer.

Depending on the shop, they will probably still frown on you buying the thing yourself instead of buying it from them... I'd just say you got it as a gift or something like that just to make things easier.

I love my 791xv, I don't know what I would do without it. When I got mine I bought it online for about 200 then I had Circuit City install it. So total I spent less than 400; it came to like 360.

I'll bet some of those are IPGs (Interior Pain Generators) which are the little piezo sirens that will deafen ppl if they are in the car with the alarm going off, lol.

Probably at least one battery-backup-siren as well, I'd imagine.

More sirens equals more noise = more attention and deterrence; also more redundancy in case the theif finds/disconnects one siren thinking it's the only one, LOL.

Yeah installation prices can be ridiculous especially if you didn't buy the system from them (because usually when you do it's a package price for the whole thing).

You don't know anyone that might do it for you? As in someone you can like "pay" with a case of beer and they'll do it on a weekend? LOL.

Since it has a remote starter, I'm thinking the lowest you'll probably get on an installation is around $200, not buying the product from them anyway. You might be able to do better, but I'd beware of cheap installs because they might be half-assed installs that will give problems after a while. Remember also that one of the most important thing with security system installs is their service and support after the install--i.e. how they handle/warranty things if you have problems down the road.

ummmm just did a reinstall of one of those on a 06 F -150 this weekend....$210. plus addtional transponder key bypass. The Bypass you'll need for your Gradn Am usually retails for around 60-70.00

Jimmy's car stereo and CKR want about $375 to install a Alarm/Remote Start System. When i said i had a 01 grand am it seem like the money lights went off in there heads. $375 also included the bypass thing. But when i do have the money, i will get all the parts myself.

Well, there's been 3-4 times in the past 2 months.. Where I've walked up to people walking around my car.. Which, normally isn't suspicious, but I don't park with all the other cars on the lot, I park in the back.. Away from any and all assheads so as to not get any damage done to the car

And, I'm getting a system put it here shortly, and I don't wanna have that stolen either

just dont advertise what you have (leave off the cute little stickers). and dont bump it all the time drawing attention to yourself

Nathan, how come you got so many sirens? im paranoid :) there is about 5k worth of aftermarket audio and security equipment in a car worth almost half that :) lol

but yea moving on, my car has 6 sirens, three of which are battery backup units that are on the outside (if they get the hood open and cut the alarms power, they will go off (i have a backup for the alarm too, so cutting the cable is useless lol) , one inside is a 140dB pain generator hidden well inside the dash, the other is a 128dB pain generator hidden elsewhere in the cabin (mainly just to cause harmonics, harmonics are very painful :) ) and then i have the actual viper siren that comes with the alarm, in my trunk.

if they manage to get the trunk open before they become paraplegics, i still have plenty of time :) everything is secured with different security bolts, not one is the same :) lol

the only downside is, oh man... my battery almost went dead awhile ago...

and with that alarm on there, that isnt a good thing.. it would go off if it got low enough, i HAD to disable the battery backup sirensfrom going off when power was cut to them. even knowing exactly where they were and exactly how to turn them off, it still took me like 5 minutes, this is with them NOT going off right beside my head!

so as it sits now (waiting until monday when i have a $1,000+ appointment with a dealership to get my waterpump and evap hose/purve test valve replaced) it is on life support from time to time on a battery charger :) just to make sure in the middle of the night at 4am the alarm doesnt go off lol.

yea, my alarm was 37x.xx after install (package price) remote start hook up and bypass thingy would cost me another 180.00 *because i got my tint, alarm, and diamond coating done there, they "would be cutting me a break". lol

i think something else that why some of the shops may not of screwed with it is because the lifetime warrenty from viper or something to that nature....

i need to get some extra goodies for my alarm.... i need a trunk censor, and id like to add another siren (batt. back up) .
