If you have all the right tools. If getting a pre-made catback (SLP, Borla) you will need a saw or torch to cut off the old system. If you are doing a custom set-up you will need to add to that a welder and pipebender.

Cutting off the old systems is typically the worst part. You need to cut above the rear axle to get it out.
The new one does not have to be welded in. I myself, actually prefer less welds. This way if I have to remove it to fix something else or to replace a part or section it will come apart alot easier.
A welder is handy when you have to fabricate your own and have to attach flanges, etc. But most cat back systems already have them attached.

so you mean use welding instead of clamps

clamps suck, they can loosen overtime and that sucks, welding is the only way to go, i wouldnt even think of using clamps

now this is one of the reasons that I go back to the garage evry week or so that I used to work at....when I put the headers and true duals on my z28 it only cost me a pizza for the shop to use the lift and air tools...my buddy even welded the pipes for me......labor cost one large pizza....next will be the cat back on the grand am

I've never seen a clamp loosen. Once they're tightened down they crimp the pipes together and then the nuts rust onto the threads. I use a saws-all to cut them off.

I'm going to Build my own piping from the headers back next month, I got 2 18 Gadge U bends for 22.50 CND each. plus a 10 foot length of 18 Gadge piping for 30 bucks. my buddy had a mig welder and I havea good touch with one. so i'm going to build the piping. I would rather spend 70 dollars and 2 days on piping than 150USD.
