I have a 94 Grand Am SE with a Q4 OHC in it and i also have a 92 Grand Am with a Q4 Tech 4 in it. I want to know if it is posable to swap the motors out? The 92 has had a wreck but to motor is good and the 94 has throwen a rod. If i could get some advise it would be great thank you.

I don't know diddly about the technical aspects of the proposed swap, except that the '92 is operated by the old and simple OBD-I computer system while the '94 is the 'new' OBD-II system but with an odd-ball data port that requires and adapter.

Bottom line: Many (or ALL) of the '92 engine sensors (including Crankshaft Position Sensor and all others) *prolly* will NOT work with the '94 'puter.
The engine wiring looms will be significantly different, too.
New sensors and wiring could run upwards of $400

I don't know where you live, or the emissions testing/inspections performed there.

But I DO know that USEPA prohibits ALL swaps of older engines into newer cars.
Period.

This generally isn't a problem unless somebody is gonna look, and be able to understand what they see.
Like anywhere in CA with its smog nazi's, and in Phoenix/Tucson which have lousy air pollution and tough annual inspections.

Somebody else will hafta chime-in on the technical aspects of the swap.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you mean a 92 with a Quad 4 DOHC (either Vin "D" or Vin "A"... doesn't matter which). If you mean a 91 or older GA with the 2.5L Tech 4 (aka Iron Duke), then this swap cannot be done easily.

You can swap all flavors of Quad 4 engines rather easily within the 92-94 chassis. All engine mounts and sensors will be identical. The SOHC PCM will even run the DOHC engines, but I would recommend getting the memcal PROM for that engine to make optimal power and have the correct revlimits.

Not true. Sensor wise, they are the same, doesn't matter what year. The only one you cannot use is the 87-88 Quad 4 since the crank trigger notches are 15 degrees off.

The only other electrical revision of the engine was the addition of a crankcase vapor heater (for anti-condensation reasons) on the oil separator tube - but this is a "dumb" device - it is not controlled by the PCM. All 92-95 2.3's will already have it anyway.

Oh, don't bother then. Since the 2.5L Iron Duke was discontinued for the body change, no 92-95 ever had it. That also means the chances of getting it working in there are pretty slim. Mounts, wiring, CV shafts... it would be a nightmare of incompatible parts. Certainly not worth it.

96 was the year OBD-II was inagurated, some 95's had the OBD-1.5, but they were the same as OBD-II.

I hate OBD-I, my car has never even flipped the MIL in 13 years even when i was missing. its pretty ancient compared to its literate II counterpart.

No, OBD 1.5 is more like 1.0 than 2.0. While 1.5 does have a few features 1.0 doesn't, it isn't nearly as complicated as OBD2. For example, no post-cat O2 sensor. Many OBD 1.0 GM code readers work with 1.5 with adapter plugs.

Some late-year 95's have OBDII. All the rest are 1.5. All 94's are 1.5 too.
