Okay, My friend found an Eagle Talon ESI for sale...they want $1,500 for it. I've tried to talk him out of it at all costs, but he wants to buy it to have. He plans on changing out the tranny and the engine, but... here's the thing...the place said there is something wrong with the engine, like a thumping noise and it won't go anywhere.

First thing popped in my head: Crankwalk.

He wants me to come out with him tomorrow to check it out and see if it is crankwalk, because he said that I'm the only guy he knows who knows the internals of engines.

Honestly, I know more about domestic engines than anything, so I was wondering, is that thumping noise crankwalk? And/or is there anywhere you can tell it's crankwalk besides the noise? Thanks.

It was the 2nd gen DSM's that had that issue... that's as far as my knowledge goes.

A friend of mine said that just by me telling him about it, he said it sounds like it's a blown synchro in the transmission. Opinions?

Yea the 2nd gens. Something with the oil sprayers getting clogged easy and causeing that.

IMO i would stay away from a DSM at all costs. If your friend wants to make a fast import, i say 240 all the way.

if he's going to be swapping the engine and tranny who cares what's wrong with the current one?

But if you're swapping out the engine and the tranny (the unreliable parts), what's there to worry about?

Additionally, something about a different number of bolts.

I think he means the replacements being unreliable too.

I'm not a DSM fan either. IMO the Evo 8's success was built off the DSM's mistakes.

If you swap in a new 4G63 that has the crankwalk problem solved, why would there be any reliability problems? (Mitsubishi's been using the same engine for decades with minor changes).

The Evo 8 is a success because the entire Evo line has been a success, and it's finally over here.

I honestly know next to nothing about DSMs, but it seems to me that if it's the same basic engine, you'd have no problem swapping in one of the more reliable Evo engines into a DSM. Then you can go forth and have fun.

The trannies are junk too. Unless you get one build buy the guy that has the brown/purple DSM that runs like low 8's (cant think of his name right now)

edit: his name is John Shepherd

Definately not crankwalk. Sounded more like a loose valve spring, or the rocker arm was messed up, because the valve cover was pinging bad, and you could feel it.

Hmmm a new hot talk catch term. LOL
I guess they get started by ones that don't know the proper terminology. Or they are the terminology from other countries.
Same way wives tails get going. Sorry I couldn't help it.
I'll behave myself now.

crankwalk a catch phrase? are you retarded?

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/walkingcrankshaft.htm

^^ info on the class action law suit filed due to the walking crank (shortened to CRANKWALK) most DSM 6-bolt engines that have been built in the US are suceptible to this design flaw.

Google mofo, do you use it?

Yea Erik I wasnt bitching at you - you actually formed you idea in a question, not a smarmy-assed comment like the guy above you. But yea, thats what crankwalk is.

And you could have done better than ass face -- jeez... coulda called me a prick, a cockmongling idiot, a douche bag, or something :D

I see no problem with a stock DSM (other than the afformentioned crankwalk, but i wont go there cus i dont wanna be called an assface), the problem is that 98% of them have been toyed with and usualy ruined by the fast and the furiouse crowd.

same reason you cant find a mid 90's Toyota MR2 that hasnt been beat to hell and "modded" with ugly air intake over the hood and some gay shifter knob.

It was constant, and you could feel it in the valve cover. Under the engine it didn't sound that bad, but right at the valves it was loud.

well then it might not be crankwalk -- but Id still stay away from it unless you have the extra cash to build it back up when it dies on ya. Its a GREAT project car, but by no means a reliable daily driver.

I wasn't looking to buy it. The dealership dude is selling it for $1500 and even bought a new engine for it and just now swapped it in. He's offering it for $1500 still and wants my friend to take the car and the old engine.

I kinda' want him to so I can rip it apart and find out what it was. :)
