View Full Version : Help an old Guy (Sunfire oil change)
My daughter has a 2005 sunfire with a 2.2 econotec engine I think.
This is a little new to me so be kind.
I want to change the oil for her but the replacement filter has no housing it’s just a paper filter can some one give me a step by step?

I've never done it myself, so I can't give you a step by step... but I can tell you where the filter goes.
The filter housing is on the front drivers side corner of the engine. It installs from the top... there is a cap to remove to access it.

It's a 'cartridge' filter, like I had on my first car, a '56 MGA.
Find the housing that's on the engine somewhere (sorry, I have no actual 'Eco-tech' experience).
(So-named as in 'Ecologically-friendlier' than other engines; so changing the oil doesn't require tossing-out 5 ozs of steel can, and other lower-impact technology)
* Remove housing, dispose of old cartridge, insert new.
*Mebbe* fill housing with fresh oil, I dunno.
* Replace.
The attachment of the housing to the engine should be idiot-proof, but you know GM: Those idiots are so damned creative
Hope this helps.

:agree:
unscrew the top, I believe its an 1 1/4 inch socket, but not positive. Cartridge pulls out and snaps back in. The filter should also come with a new gasket to go around the screw cap, replace that as well. We usually drain oil while filter is still out, but it doesnt matter that much.
and its not always idiot proof. I started to unscrew one on a saturn one day and it came off crooked. The solution was to shatter that one and go buy a new one

I trashed a motor on my 69 MG when replacing the filter. Just make sure that seal in there correctly.

There should be some step by step instructions for something like that. I'd google it and see what you get.

The filter is accessible through the top... see the black thingy on the right of the pic... http://ecotecpower.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=86&t=70&start=25&r=2
the oil filter on the Ford 8n tractor is a cartridge style... it's easy to get to and I personally like it better than swearing at a screw-on pop can that the guy at wal*mart lube overtightened.

Snap-on makes a special socket for the Eco Tech filter cap. It's a 37mm shallow. It costs $30. :(
My Daughters car has an ecotech, so I charged her for the socket along with the cost of oil and filter. :D

what do you need a special socket for :idunno: We just use regular ones.

This socket is a low profile design. On the newer Eco Tech motors the intake runner for #4 cylinder covers half the oil filter housing cap. This socket is approximately one inch deep, which allows room to unscrew the housing cover. After buying mine from snap-on, I found one for $12.99 on line. D'oh!!

I just drop a regular socket on the nut, then stick the extension in the socket. My intake has an indentation for the extension.
Thanks to everyone for showing this old dog a new trick.
I changed the oil today and it went as smooth as silk.
Just used an 1-¼ socket and an extension.
